The Charlotte Hornets had a tough season to say the least. Just one year after making the playoffs, the Hornets finished this season 10 games under .500 at 36-46 and back in the lottery. The odds were in their favors during the draft and they were able to land Kentucky Guard Malik Monk at #11. Monk will give the Hornets something that they have sorely needed, and that is scoring help for star Point Guard Kemba Walker.
The Hornets were also able to add big man Dwight Howard days before the draft as they prepare for the start of Free Agency.
Charlotte will have two free agents beginning July 1st, Brain Roberts and Christian Wood. Both players were in place for depth purposes and with this free agency class being littered with talent, it is safe to assume both will not return to the Hornets next season.
Swarmandsting.comBrain Roberts was the third point guard in rotation for the Hornets behind Kemba Walker and Ramon Sessions. He averaged 10 minutes per game in 41 games while contributing 3.5 PPG and 1.3 APG. The drafting of Monk from Kentucky all but ensures that he will not return.
Charlotte ObserverChristian Wood’s future with the team is all but over. He was their youngest prospect at 21 years old but was owed $1.4 million next season, the front office declined their option for him back in May. In his lone season with the Hornets, the 6’11 big man averaged 2.7 points per game, 2.2 rebounds per game and 0.5 blocks per game. He appeared in 13 games for the Hornets while averaging 8.2 minutes per game. He shot 52.2% from the field and 73.3% from the free throw line. With his age and performance in the D-League there is a chance that Wood may find himself back on the Hornets roster.
