Basketball is played worldwide, but the National Basketball Association is by far the most popular league worldwide.

Fans from all corners of the globe are devoted to streaming the electrifying games, buying merchandise, and supporting their basketball heroes. But how has the NBA become so wildly popular compared to other global leagues out there, like EuroLeague?

Why did the NBA become so popular globally?

One thing is for certain: basketball is a thrilling sport packed with strategy, skill, and showmanship. Due to these factors, it’s become one of the world’s most beloved sports. But what is it about the NBA that sets it apart from every other league? It all comes down to:

  1. Expansion
  2. Star power
  3. Marketing

NBA Expansion

When the NBA first started, there were only a few teams. Initially, the league focused only on teams from bigger cities like Boston, New York, and Detroit. As it expanded to other areas and allowed more teams to join, the fanbase grew.

With expansion comes diversity. As the NBA grew into the most competitive league in the world and the most lucrative for players, all the top talent wanted to get a piece of the pie. Players like Tony Kukoc and Arvydas Sabonis opened the door for a wave of talented European players to come play in the NBA. As players like Tony Parker and Dirk Nowitzki began to see major success and stack the Larry O’Brien trophies, the magnetic pull of the NBA became stronger than ever.

Now many of the top players in the association, including Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, and Victor Wembanyama, hail from Europe. In fact, an American-born player hasn’t won an MVP since James Harden in 2o18. The game has gone global, and so has the talent, bringing with it a new country of loyal fans.

Regarding future expansion, The NBA is considering a two-team expansion that would bring the league to 32 teams. Seattle and Las Vegas are the suspected destinations for this expansion, with the latter being a strategic pick due to its influence on the sports betting world.

Due to the global popularity of the NBA, it remains one of the most fun and lucrative sports to start betting on. So, if you’re a punter and new to betting on the NBA, your best bet is to check out the best betting sites like Neds for up-to-date information & tips on the NBA

The NBA’s Star Power

The second factor that played a role in elevating the league was that of the first basketball superstars.

Due to their skills, physiques and charisma, basketball players in the NBA became more than just sportsmen; they became celebrities and influenced many facets of business, fashion and entertainment. Some of the first stars to emerge from the NBA were Bill Russell and Bob Cousy. Then came the 1990s when fans all over the world were left marveling at the basketball legend that was Michael Jordan. As more basketball stars were created, the crowds became obsessed with seeing all their idols go head-to-head.

Kobe Bryant, though, was the first American-born player to form a cult-like following on multiple continents. He was universally beloved in China, inducing a level of fanaticism that had never been seen before. There are stories of 15,000 people lining up outside airports at 9AM just to catch a glimpse of him. Anyone who tuned into the 2008 Beijing Olympics can speak to the pure zealotry we witnessed.

He introduced millions of Chinese people to basketball and created lifelong fans. Since then, players like James Harden have followed suit, creating their own cult-like followings in China.

Marketing

The superfans were devoted to backing their teams and favorite players, and this is where the NBA really capitalized on the attention it was receiving by pushing its marketing.

1992 was a massive year for the NBA. When the “Dream Team” played at the Olympics, fans all over the world caught basketball fever and fell in love with the NBA’s infectious, flashy, high-flying, high-paced brand of basketball. The whole world got to see Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and Larry Bird on the same court. It was basketball Nirvana.

Since then, the NBA has doubled down on its international marketing. From games in Paris and Mexico City to youth programs in Nigeria, the NBA is trying to cultivate a worldwide fanbase.

New TV contracts will kick in next season. NBC and Amazon will both stream NBA games, bringing NBA basketball to millions more households. These lucrative deals will attempt to further bridge the accessibility gap between fans and their team.

Final Thoughts

The USA is the birthplace of basketball, so it makes sense that basketball superfans would support the NBA. However, that’s only one small contributing factor to the NBA’s popularity. Whether it’s the marketing, players, history, or overall atmosphere, the NBA remains the top global basketball league, and it looks like it will continue to be.
