The San Francisco 49ers survived a thriller against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, securing a 23-20 victory.
This win puts the Niners at 5-4, marking their first time with a winning record since Week 1, when they defeated the New York Jets.
A Game Full of Drama and Mistakes
This game had it all for the 49ers: fourth-quarter lead changes, teammates getting physical with one another, missed kicks, and late-game penalties. Despite several mistakes, Jake Moody managed to sneak in a 44-yard field goal as time expired, redeeming himself after missing three earlier in the game.
Dominating Control but Struggling in the Red Zone
Throughout the game, the 49ers largely controlled play.
They moved the ball effectively while the defense kept Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers’ offense in check, allowing only three points in the first half. However, San Francisco struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, putting up just 10 points before halftime due to red-zone issues. Even with Christian McCaffrey back in action, the Niners managed only three points on two red-zone trips, highlighting an ongoing problem.
Moody’s Misses Keep Buccaneers in the Game
The Niners’ inability to extend their lead was also due to Moody’s missed kicks as he made his return from an ankle injury. These misses kept Tampa Bay in the game, and the Buccaneers found their spark on special teams early in the third quarter. Jacob Cowaning collided with his teammate Darrell Luter Jr., leading to a muffed punt recovered by Anthony Nelson. This set up Tampa Bay’s first touchdown—a Baker Mayfield 8-yard pass to Rachaad White.
Late-Game Heroics and Costly Penalties
Both teams traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter, setting up a dramatic finish. With just over two minutes remaining, the Buccaneers had the ball, down by three. Mayfield made an impressive play, stiff-arming Nick Bosa on fourth down to find White and extend the drive. Then, the 49ers defense committed four penalties, totaling over 35 yards, giving the Buccaneers a first-and-goal opportunity with just over a minute left. The Niners’ defense came up with a clutch stop, forcing a 26-yard field goal from Chase McLaughlin to tie the game.
Purdy Clutches Up
This gave Brock Purdy a chance to lead a game-winning drive, which he executed with precision. Key completions to Juan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall brought the Niners down to the 26-yard line, setting up Moody’s 44-yard field goal for the walk-off victory.
Concerns Despite the Win
The main positive takeaway from this game is that the 49ers finally have a winning record. However, they are making too many mistakes, mistakes that are typically associated with weaker teams. Contending teams can’t afford to survive largely on talent alone. If these issues aren’t resolved, the 49ers’ Super Bowl aspirations may remain just a fantasy.
