Bronny James has accomplished his childhood dream of playing in the NBA, but unfortunately, his rookie season has been a media circus.
He is aware of the pressure that comes with being LeBron James‘s son, but fans will still compare him to his father— even if it’s a highly unfair expectation.
NBA Media Festering Nonstop, 24/7 Coverage
Many NBA media pundits believe the 19-year-old shouldn’t have been selected in the 2024 NBA draft, leading to one of the most polarizing topics in the sports world today.
It’s such a passionate topic that LeBron James confronted world-renowned sports journalist Stephen A. Smith courtside during the Lakers’ game against the Knicks on March 6.
Smith later addressed the situation on ESPN’s First Take the following day and discussed it in deeper detail on his YouTube channel, The Stephen A. Smith Show, on March 8.
LeBron defended his son after Smith said that Bronny was ‘not ready’ to be drafted during a segment on First Take. Many other NBA pundits shared Smith’s remarks, but Bronny also has many supporters. By December last year, 500,000 Bronny jerseys had reportedly already been sold, generating $50 million in revenue for the franchise.
It’s an unprecedented number for a first-year, second-round draft pick, and after a rocky start, he has finally found his footing in the NBA G League.
Bronny’s G League Journey Has Helped Him Immensely
Bronny has looked great as a part of the South Bay Lakers, averaging 20.6 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game.
Ever since arriving in El Segundo, California, he has come into his own, proving he has a future in the NBA after being doubted by the masses. His talent is undeniable, and he is playing some of his best basketball against the best competition he’s faced in his entire life.
After missing most of his collegiate career at USC due to heart issues and safety precautions, he is finally showcasing his true potential.
He has finished with 20+ points on multiple occasions. On Jan. 24, he exploded for 31 points against the Rip City Remix, showcasing an ability to score at all three levels. His scoring and playmaking were on full display, proving that G League development was the best decision he could’ve made at this stage in his career.
His dedication has led to opportunities on the main roster. Head Coach JJ Redick gave Bronny closing minutes during their March 17 matchup vs. the San Antonio Spurs. Even Spurs fans showed him support.
During the post-game scrum, the media asked Bronny about his journey in the G League, and he spoke about the experience.
“I always try to stay as lowkey as I can, whether that’s media or everything really, living life,” said James. “Putting in the work behind the scenes has been very good for me; I worked all summer before the draft, and im still working right now, so I can see improvement, and it’s going well for me.”
Can Bronny Be part of The Luka Lakers long term?
Bronny’s rookie season will end on April 13. At 20 years old, he is somewhat close in age to the 26-year-old Dončić, and their playstyles complement each other. This makes him a valuable piece for the ‘Luka Lakers’ heading into the 2030s.
He has proven to be an NBA-caliber talent, and given his father’s role on the team, there is undoubtedly a sense of protection over him. As one of the (if not the) greatest players of all time, LeBron has had a higher level of influence than the other NBA superstars of his era. Bronny is in the perfect situation to develop alongside his young superstar teammate, father, and supportive head coach.
Redick has been a massive advocate of Bronny and his talents. During the rookies’ introductory press conference last summer, Redick told the media, “ I just want to clarify: Rob (Pelinka) and I didn’t hand Bronny this; he earned this.”
He has given him multiple opportunities thus far, including in the first quarter vs. the Philadelphia 76ers on Jan. 28.
Because of his basketball IQ and close friendship with his father, Redick will be an excellent teacher. His G League success this season proves he can build a winning culture with proper talent and construct cohesive rotations. Bronny has all the support needed to succeed, now we get to watch it all unfold.
Even Bronny Could Eventually Get Traded, Though
The NBA is a ruthless business, and he plays for an illustrious franchise that prioritizes winning above all else. In an interview with NPR’s Morning Edition, Lakers owner and President Jeanie Buss revealed that multiple ‘complaints’ from Anthony Davis triggered the infamous trade on Feb. 2.
“Anthony Davis was complaining about where he was being played, and he wasn’t happy,” said Buss. “So I think this was a positive for both teams. They got what they were looking for; we got what we were looking for.”
If a superstar and future Hall Of Famer like Anthony Davis can be traded, so can a young player like Bronny James.
He is a massive fan favorite, so the front office will likely be more lenient than they would be with a regular second-round pick.
Bronny is coming off a career-high 17 points and five assists with LeBron and Luka watching from the sidelines. It’s clear things are trending in the right direction for the young point guard.
