As if the San Francisco 49ers’ season couldn’t get any worse, it has. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that star running back Christian McCaffrey has indeed suffered a PCL injury, which typically requires a six-week recovery. With only five weeks left in the regular season, it is highly likely McCaffrey will miss the remainder of the year. Adding insult to injury, Shanahan also confirmed that running back Jordan Mason is heading to injured reserve due to a high-ankle sprain.
Jordan Mason adds insult to injury (literally)
Mason was having a stellar campaign, rushing for 789 yards on 153 attempts. His contributions were critical to the 49ers’ run game, while McCaffrey missed the first half of the season. Now, with both McCaffrey and Mason sidelined, the offense faces even greater challenges.
A Silver Lining
While McCaffrey’s injury is devastating news, it could have been worse. He has been dealing with Achilles tendinitis, which initially led fans to fear a more severe injury, such as a ruptured Achilles. The diagnosis of a PCL strain that does not require surgery provides a small silver lining. If surgery had been necessary, his season would be over without question. Now, there is at least hope that McCaffrey could return if the 49ers manage to stay in playoff contention late in the season.
Thin Running Back Depth Compounds Challenges
However, that scenario seems increasingly unlikely. The 49ers have been outscored 73-10 in their last two games, a stark departure from the dominance they displayed over the past half-decade. Injuries have piled up across the roster, exposing serious vulnerabilities in the team’s structure. With their top two running backs unavailable, the 49ers will rely on third-string back Isaac Guerendo moving forward, a daunting prospect for an already struggling offense.
