The 2022 departure of star receiver Davante Adams raised questions regarding who would step up as the Packers’ WR1. As of this week, the question has been answered.
Christian Watson has finally firmly established himself as a true WR1 in Green Bay. The 2022 second-round pick seemed destined for Adams comparisons after being drafted just weeks after the long-time Packer departed for the Las Vegas Raiders.
Watson made his season debut on October 26, just nine months after sustaining a season-ending knee injury against the Chicago Bears. Despite missing the team’s first six games, Watson is just 90 yards and one touchdown behind the Packers’ receiving leaders.
This is elite-level production from a player coming off a severe injury. Head Coach Matt LaFleur offered praise for the returning star following the Packers’ Week 14 win over the Bears.
“I’m just really proud of how he is. What happened a year ago versus the Chicago Bears and how he’s responded and how he’s worked to get him into a spot now where you go out and you see what he can do. Got a lot of love and a lot of respect for Christian Watson,” said LaFleur.
Christian Watson Returning Stronger than Ever
It is not uncommon for players returning from significant knee injuries to struggle early in their return. The opposite has been true for Christian Watson.
Watson has returned to the lineup with a fury, and is already on pace to set career highs in receiving yards and touchdowns. The Packers star has established himself as a top receiving threat in the league with a 2.47 yards per route run, ranking seventh in the NFL. Watson is simply outperforming his peers around the league.
The Packers could not have found their WR1 at a better time. The NFC North is among the most competitive divisions in football again. Green Bay has shown consistent offensive production, scoring 23 or more points over a four-game winning streak. Watson has led the team in receiving in two of those four games, while contributing five touchdowns.
Importance to Packers Offense
Green Bay has four games remaining in the 2025 season. They are in no position to take their foot off the gas with the Bears just a half-game behind them in the NFC North. Watson’s resurgence has come at the perfect time, while quarterback Jordan Love adapted to life without Tucker Kraft, following his own ACL tear.
The Packers are entering a critical four-game stretch which includes road contests against the 11-win Broncos and two division rivals. Green Bay will have the opportunity to host a home playoff game if they can continue winning. Watson and his blazing 21.6 MPH speed will certainly help the Packers in their race to the top of the NFC North.
