The Detroit Lions completed their hunt through the AFC South with a 24-6 win. The Indianapolis Colts failed to support Anthony Richardson with their struggling-to-come-together offense.
Holes in the offense are not what a team wants when the Lions come to town. Despite injuries, the Lions’ defense remained constant, preventing touchdowns in their 10th straight quarter and holding another team scoreless through the second half. The Colts could not get past the lockdown defense led by Jack Campbell, and their mistakes.
While the Lions beat the Colts, their own mistakes doomed them.
The Lions, though victorious, aren’t leaving the game feeling as satisfied as other times this season. The defense was quick to make stops, but just as quick to see players leave the field due to injury. David Montgomery, Khalif Raymond, Taylor Decker, and Carlton Davis III were pulled from the game at varying times. Barring Decker, all are listed as questionable.
What We Learned
Defensive depth is impressive.
The Lions defense has struggled all season with injuries. Ten players are currently on IR. The team takes being the next man up and ready to go seriously. What shows the most is the team’s ability to work together. Nobody on the field looks lost, and everyone can work together. Even when there is no highlight turnover, there are QB pressures, quick tackles, and broken-up passes— they all require a prepared defense.
Two RBs are better than one.
Everyone has been watching the duo the Lions have in the backfield. They have 21 TDs this season. Montgomery has 10 and is on his way to breaking his season record of 13. After Montgomery left in the third quarter, Jahmyr Gibbs picked up the play. He had 90 yards and two TDs for the day.
Looking Forward
The record books still aren’t safe.
Their 10-1 start ties their best in a season, and they are looking to have the most wins in a season in franchise history (12 wins in 2023). Montgomery can break Jamaal Williams‘s 2022 record for 17 rushing TDs in a season.
Short week
It’s Thanksgiving week. The Lions return to NFC North match-ups hosting the Bears at 12:30 ET on Thursday. The Bears took the Vikings to OT on Sunday but lost by a field goal. The Bears are 10-8 against the Lions on Thanksgiving.
