Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters has in fact decided to become a free agent on July 1 after not picking up his player option for 2017-18. Waiters was scheduled for a $3.2 million pay bay.

Waiters had a phenomenal year for the Heat as he was looked upon as the leader for the franchise. For the Heat, Waiters averaged 15.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists which were all career highs. Waiters also shot 39.5 percent from beyond the arc, which is a career high. Waiters only managed to play 46 games due to injuries.

Waiters spent the previous two seasons in OKC where he averaged 10 points, 3 rebounds, and two assists.

Earlier this week, the Lakers have been suitors for the landing spot for Waiters as Barry Jackson of the Miami Heral reported. The Lakers, however, are not looking to spend a lot of money on him.

“I’m really looking to keep the cap space that we have and really try to play in next year’s free agent class, and not really this free agent class,” Lakers president Magic Johnson told reporters, per Jackson.
