Whether a franchise quarterback would fall into their lap during the NFL Draft was uncertain, but a new direction was essential for future success.
When the Patriots used the third overall pick (their highest since 1993) on Drake Maye, a raw but talented quarterback from North Carolina, the fanbase reacted with cautious optimism. Concerns about the organization’s ability to develop the unproven quarterback’s talent were widespread, and expectations for his rookie season were modest at best.
Maye’s Development
Young quarterbacks are often tasked with improving as pocket passers since success at the professional level hinges on the ability to read coverages and make decisive plays from the pocket.
Maye faced criticism for his footwork and decision-making at UNC, raising doubts about his ability to thrive behind a weak roster. Some analysts, such as NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran, argued that the Patriots should have built a stronger supporting cast before drafting a quarterback.
Impressive Debut
Maye’s first career start came in Week 6 against the Houston Texans, whose defense had stifled opposing quarterbacks all season. Yet Maye gave Houston trouble throughout the game, throwing for 243 yards and three touchdowns while leading the team in rushing.
Fast forward to Week 13, and Maye has continued to silence his critics. His athleticism, football IQ, and ability to escape pressure have been fully displayed. Whether in the first quarter or crunch time, Maye’s performance has turned heads around the league. His dual-threat capabilities were evident during Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, where he threw for 238 yards and rushed for 51 more.
Leadership Qualities
Being a franchise quarterback requires more than on-field success. Leadership and poise separate the good from the great. Maye’s confidence, personality, and positive attitude have quickly made him a respected leader and role model, turning heads from veterans on the team. After a narrow loss to the Tennessee Titans, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne praised the rookie.
“I think that’s what the greatest thing about Drake is he’s doing things that you don’t really see at a young age… He has the aura to him.”
By the Numbers
Maye’s rookie campaign has etched his name into the record books. He has thrown for 1,696 yards and 12 total touchdowns, with a 58.0 QBR. According to Next Gen Stats, his Expected Completion Percentage (ECP) of 65.9% ranks higher than potential MVP candidates like Joe Burrow and Josh Allen.
However, ball security remains an area for improvement. Maye’s 12 turnovers reflect the growing pains of a developing quarterback. Despite this, he leads all Patriots players in rushing yards since taking over as the starter.
A Bright Future
Maye’s playstyle draws comparisons to Allen’s, as both are gunslingers with big-play potential. While Maye is far from reaching Allen’s level, the potential is undeniable.
While the Patriots are not in a position for immediate success, Maye’s talent and four-year rookie contract give them a foundation to build on. The question remains whether New England can provide the infrastructure and culture needed to return to their former prominence.
