When the Green Bay Packers’ 2025–26 season ended, many were unsure about the future of head coach Matt LaFleur.
Those questions arose from Ed Policy’s decision to delay extension talks, as LaFleur still had one year remaining on his contract entering the 2025 season. While Policy initially held off on the extension until the season concluded, both sides reached an agreement shortly afterward.
It had been reported that the Packers and LaFleur agreed on terms for a multiyear extension, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
LaFleur’s Winning Legacy
LaFleur has, no doubt, established himself as one of the winningest head coaches in the NFL. Since taking over in 2019, he has a regular-season record of 76-40-1, giving him a strong 65.4% winning percentage.
One of the biggest takeaways since LaFleur became the Packers’ head coach is his performance in December. In that month, he went 21-4, with an 84% win rate. This is one of the most efficient December records in the league for coaches with at least 15 games. This record also ties him with Packers legend Vince Lombardi, who went 21-4-2 in December.
Adding to his coaching resume in Green Bay, LaFleur has also led the Packers to the playoffs in six of his seven seasons as head coach.
Building Forward
With defensive coordinator Jeff Haffley recently hired by the Miami Dolphins, it’s hard to imagine the Packers letting both coordinators go – especially when one is already the head coach. It could have been a disappointing reality.
The Packers remain the league’s youngest team, building a culture and locker room centered on stability and growth. Retaining LaFleur, who has experienced the highs and lows alongside the roster, allows the Packers to build from a familiar foundation.

Following the Wild Card loss, Jordan Love was asked, “Do you think Matt should remain the coach of this team, and why do you think that?” Love responded, “Yeah, I definitely think Matt should be the head coach. I got a lot of love for Matt, and I think he does a good job.”
