You may know him as the NBA’s 2017 Slam Dunk champion or as a former Michigan Wolverine. He is also a former Indiana Pacer and the son of retired NBA player, Glenn Robinson. Now, you must acknowledge him as a Detroit Piston. Midnight was the start of free agency and teams all over have been trying to make their moves. The Detroit Pistons were pretty quiet during the start of free agency but on Sunday afternoon, the team made a good move.
According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, The Detroit Pistons and Glenn Robinson III have agreed to a two year deal, including a team option for the second year. Shams also reported that the deal is worth $8.3M, which is a fairly good deal for the Pistons considering the teams’ financial woes.
Glenn Robinson III was a powerhouse back in college for the Michigan Wolverines. During his freshman year, he helped carry the Wolverines to the NCAA national championship game (lost to Louisville). He also played hard during his sophomore year. He played a big role in helping the Wolverines get back into the NCAA tournament, where they reached the elite eight round. Glenn was a good scorer, rebounder, and defender during his short time with the Wolverines.
Fast forward to his days with the Indiana Pacers, Glenn Robinson III has made three playoff appearances with his former team. The 2016-17 season was his best season in the NBA, thus far, posting career-highs in games played (69), minutes played (20.7/game), field goal percentage (47%), rebounds (2.7/game), and points (6.1/game). He also put up quite the performance during the 2017 All-Star weekend, winning the Slam Dunk contest. Unfortunately, Glenn played in less games during his final season with the Pacers due to injury concerns. Obviously, this resulted in less games and minutes, and a drop in numbers. Overall, he averaged 4.1 points and 1.6 rebounds this past season. His 44.5% career field goal percentage is quite impressive and should help beef up Detroit’s bench.
There’s no doubt that the Detroit Pistons have picked up a good wing man. Despite coming up short in stats, Glenn Robinson III should see more minutes in rotation with the Pistons other guards and wing men. According to his time with the Wolverines and the Pacers, Glenn Robinson III has what it takes to develop his game and become a solid star, or at least, a good role player for the Pistons.
