After parting ways with Jerod Mayo in the 2025 offseason, the New England Patriots had a mountain to climb.
The roster was depleted, and it seemed that the “Patriot Way” had fully run its course. The franchise faced uncertainty to levels it hadn’t experienced in decades. The impact on the Patriots’ culture was significant, prompting a reassessment of team values.
At A Crossroads
In the 2023 regular season, the Patriots finished 4-13, which led to the removal of the legendary Bill Belichick. Soon after, they hired Jerod Mayo to be their next head coach. It was a position that had not seen a change in 24 seasons. The shift was crucial in bringing in a new Patriots’ culture.
They also promoted Elliot Wolf, who had a great deal of experience in the NFL, to be the Executive Vice President of Player Personnel. Elliot is the son of former Packers GM and Pro-Football Hall of Famer Ron Wolf. Elliot has worked with the Packers and also as the assistant GM of the Cleveland Browns in 2018 and 2019.
The Patriots also added University of North Carolina Quarterback Drake Maye with their first-round pick. The presence of young talent is vital in preserving Patriots culture.
Yet, the 2024 regular season proved to be no better for the Patriots. They finished once again at a dismal 4-13.
Righting The Ship
This led to a surprise move by Patriots owner Robert Kraft. From there, he fired first-year head coach Jerod Mayo. He then replaced Mayo with another former Patriots linebacker, Mike Vrabel.
The three-time Super Bowl champion spent six seasons with the Tennessee Titans as the Head Coach. In Tennessee, Vrabel saw some glimpses of success, going a combined 56-48 with multiple playoff wins, and even winning the 2021 Coach of the Year Award.
The Patriots also brought back former Offensive Coordinator, Josh McDaniels. McDaniels won six Super Bowl titles in his time coaching in New England, bringing with him a deep understanding of Patriots culture. He also had head coaching stints in Denver and Las Vegas.
Another key hire for the Patriots was John Streicher, who has garnered the nickname ‘Stretch.’ He was given the title of Vice President of Football Operations and Strategy.
Streicher spent time under Vrabel in Tennessee in various roles. Last season, he worked under Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay as the team’s game management coordinator. Streicher has brought experience and stability to a Patriots roster that desperately needed it.
With Vrabel, Wolf, and Streicher in place, the Patriots hit the ground running in the 2025 offseason, signing free agents such as Stefon Diggs, Milton Williams, Harold Landry III, Robert Spillane, and Carlton Davis.
These players all have one thing in common that they have brought to the team. Experience. With the key free agent signings, the Patriots’ front office was not finished. They drafted All-American tackle Will Campbell, running back TreVeyon Henderson, and wide receiver Kyle Williams to resuscitate the offense.
The Culture Shift
From the first day of team activities in April, the Patriots’ culture seemed to have completely shifted under Mike Vrabel. It seemed that after every day of practice, they got better. The communication throughout the building was as clear as it may have ever been.
Players like Marcus Jones, Jahlani Tavai, and Kayshon Boutte, who had struggled in previous years, looked like they were responding to the coaching and the culture change.
Additionally, younger players such as Drake Maye and Will Campbell have quickly blossomed into stars. Maye is in conversations to win the MVP trophy this year.
Crucially, the Patriots’ culture now encourages open communication and camaraderie, and Drake Maye has been a very vocal part of this new culture. “It’s the guys around me,” said Maye. “We’re instilling confidence in each other and the confidence in myself, and just keep on going out there and getting some wins under your belt, it helps with that.”
And from the list of new free agent signings, Stefon Diggs has proven to be a great leader for the young wide receiver core. For years, Diggs has had a reputation of being a “diva” wide receiver, a term given to players like Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson, and Keyshawn Johnson, for being vocal critics in the media of the operations of the team.
However, Diggs has revitalized his career as a part of the Patriots. He has been able to do all of this while coming off a torn ACL late last season.
Where To Go From Here
The Patriots now sit at 9-2 after a win on Thursday Night Football against the New York Jets. Right now, the team’s culture plays a major role in their success.
Meanwhile, the new look Patriots are one of the most dangerous teams in the NFL, and not just from this 11-game stretch alone, but for what the future can hold. Patriots’ culture, which emphasizes adaptability and resilience, is central to their newfound success.
The Patriots will have about $66 million in available cap space this offseason, which is the 10th most in the NFL. After all, with the offensive core of Drake Maye, Will Campbell, and TreVeyon Henderson all on their rookie contracts, the Patriots can choose to either spend that money on paying guys such as standout cornerback Christian Gonzalez or continue to develop this roster through free agency.
Now that New England could once again be a favorable place to play for players around the league, the sky’s the limit.
