John Wall wasted no time in getting his money as he agreed to sign a four-year, $170 million “supermax” extension with the Washington Wizards Friday night, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical.
This will pay him a grand total of $207 million through 2023, which includes a player option and a trade kicker. This was a no brainer for Washington to sign their franchise player long term despite the hefty price for one of the few elite point guards in the league. Last season, Wall averaged 23 points, 4.2 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game. He led the Wizards to the second round of the playoffs and came up one game short in taking down the Boston Celtics.
His gifted playmaking abilities are what every team covets the most in today’s league. To be considered one of the best teams in the league, an elite point guard is the biggest piece to the victory puzzle. Wall, arguably a top-five point guard in the league, belongs in that discussion. After receiving his well-deserved payday, the next step for the 26-year-old will be trying to find his way into an eastern conference finals appearance. And with all the drama going down in Cleveland, he could very well be on his way.
