As the new year looms, the future for one NBA superstar is anything but certain.
On Wednesday, Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler reportedly told ESPN that he would prefer to be dealt before the upcoming trade deadline. The possible shakeup comes as the rift between Butler — a six-time All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection — and Miami continues to grow.
The implications for this year remain significant as the 2024-25 season reaches a critical point. The new year looming means there are roughly two months left before February 6, the final day all 30 teams can engage in midseason trades.
Considering Butler’s current situation, arguably shaky value (for better or worse), and Miami’s outlook for this season, a blockbuster trade is possible— and pretty complicated.
Here is how the tension between Butler and Miami developed and the critical factors to consider for any blockbuster deal involving both sides.
What led to this moment?
Butler inked a contract with Miami during the 2019 offseason (four years, $140 million) in a sign-and-trade deal involving Philadelphia.
The move elevated Miami to at least “frisky contender” status for the next four years. Between 2020 and 2023, the Heat had a winning percentage between .537 and .646. Miami would end up reaching three Eastern Conference Finals and two NBA Finals. This was easily the best stretch Miami had since the LeBron James era.
In the past two years, however, Miami started to decline. The Heat finished 46-36 last year and lost in the first round. As of December 25 this season, Miami is 14-13.
Butler signed a three-year extension after the Finals run in 2023. It’s been a slow descent for the team since.
On top of that, the Heat is currently facing another looming extension decision with Butler. He owns a player option for 2025-26 heading into his age-36 season. Butler desired that extension in May, but Miami has yet to offer it. According to ESPN, Miami seems willing to at least put a feeler out there on possible trades involving Butler.
Heading into this season, Butler ranked as one of the most notable potential free agents who could be on the open market this summer.
What hurdles stand in the way of a deal?
Possible suitors for Butler need to look at several key points of data. There are five things to consider that stand out:
- Dollar value: Butler’s player option for 2025-26 is for roughly $52 million, according to Spotrac. Whoever trades for Butler must possess enough salary to combine to get near that number. Considering the financial restrictions in the new CBA, it becomes a lot more challenging to pull off midseason.
- Age: Butler will be entering his age-36 season, which raises questions about his future, considering the number of basketball miles he’s already accumulated.
- Availability: This remains the biggest concern for any trade acquiring Butler. He hasn’t played 65 games or more since 2018-19. Butler played between 57 and 64 games in his last three years (missing 65 total games). He has already missed seven of Miami’s 27 games in 2024-25.
- Contract extension: Unlike Miami, Butler’s possible next team would need to be willing to extend him to a number he considers reasonable.
- Destination: Butler reportedly wants to be traded to a “win-now contender,” per ESPN. Those teams will likely a) have the aforementioned harsh restrictions from the CBA and/or b) lack the assets Miami would want in a deal.
- Incentive: Considering Butler could decline his player option this summer, Miami could always stay pat and let the 2024-25 campaign ride out. There doesn’t seem to be much downside outside losing Butler for absolutely nothing.
Again, those factors other teams will consider before finalizing any deal.
What does Jimmy Butler bring to the table?
Even at his age and number, Butler still brings value to teams looking to make a leap. He’s a veteran who provides legit isolation scoring and creation for a team that needs one. Butler’s postseason play always takes a step forward compared to the regular season:
- Butler in 2022 and 2023 (regular season): 21.9 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 1.6 SPG, 52% shooting, 38% from three
- Butler in 2022 and 2023 (playoffs): 27.1 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 5.3 APG, 1.9 SPG, 48% shooting, 35% from three
According to ESPN, the main contenders to acquire Butler include Phoenix, Golden State, Dallas and Houston. Houston boasts the best combination of picks, young players and roster flexibility. Phoenix, Golden State and Dallas all face issues with matching salaries and dishing out enough picks. As of December 25, all four teams were at least .500 or better.
