Kings Waive Matt Barnes

on

The Sacramento Kings have waived veteran forward Matt Barnes, ESPN’s Marc Stein reports.

After acquiring Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, and Langston Galloway for DeMarcus Cousins and Omri Casspi last night, the Kings were forced to clear a roster spot in order for this trade to go through.

Unfortunately for Barnes, he has never been able to find a stable home in the NBA. Since being drafted back in 2002, Barnes has played for nine different teams, three of which he had multiple stints with (Grizzlies, Clippers, Kings).

There is a chance that Barnes could be picked up by one of the other 29 teams in the league. Barnes is averaging 7.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists over 25.3 minutes per game this season. Teams looking to make a playoff push could use Barnes’ veteran leadership. If Barnes goes unclaimed, he will become a free agent, and at 36 years old, may consider retirement.
