LeBron James Speaks About Colin Kaepernick, Police Brutality, and More

on

The backlash that Colin Kaepernick has received from kneeling during the National Anthem has shocked many people, including Cleveland Cavaliers Forward LeBron James.  During NBA media day, James gave his opinion on Kaepernick and whether he will stand for the National Anthem.

“Me standing for the National Anthem is something I will do. That’s who I am. That’s what I believe in. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect and don’t agree with what Colin Kaepernick is doing.” James said. “You have the right to voice your opinion, stand for your opinion, and he’s doing it in the most peaceful way I’ve ever seen someone do something.”

James is no stranger to expressing his feelings against social issues.  During this year’s Espy’s awards LeBron James, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwyane Wade opened the award show with one of the most powerful speeches at any award show that we’ve ever seen.

James expressed his fear for his sons against police brutality, as his oldest son (12 years old) will be driving in four years.  “It’s a scary thought to think if your son gets pulled over, and you tell your kids that if you just comply, and listen to the police, they will be respectful and things will work it self out.”  James said.  “Then you see these videos that continue to come out.  It’s a scary A** situation.”

LeBron James is one of, if not the most well known athlete in the world, but he’s not afraid to stand against social issues.  Which is rare for a superstar of his caliber.  It’s been great to see LeBron James, and other NBA players step up, and speak out against police brutality, and the social injustices against African-Americans.

Not only has James stood up and tried to make a change verbally, but he’s been active in the communities as he has sent more than 1,000 kids to college on scholarships.  LeBron James has been criticized on the court throughout his career (which is apart of the game), but off the court he has been one of the most honorable and consistent superstars that we’ve seen.
