Los Angeles Clippers Hot Start To The 2016-17 NBA Season

on

This season the Los Angeles Clippers have started unexpectedly good. They have a current record of 9-1 and have set a franchise record for best start to a season. They have shown extreme versatility on both ends of the court, and opened the eyes of most casual NBA fans. But with a very similar roster as last season what has allowed the Clippers improve?

Starting Lineup’s ability to defend:

The Clippers are frequently known for their ability to score the basketball, but this season has been all about defense. The Clippers have the best defensive rating at 92.7 and four of the top five players in player defensive rating (Luc Mbah a Moute, Chris Paul, DeAndre Jordan, and Blake Griffin). But they have also continued to frequently score the basketball. Chris Paul is still running the offense, Blake Griffin is continuing to give his shot more range, J.J. Redick is still scorching teams from the 3-point line, and DeAndre Jordan has continued to take advantage of easy shots. With the best defense in the NBA, and one of the best offenses, the Los Angeles Clippers arguably have the best starting unit.

Bench’s Improvement:

The Clippers have had an average to below average bench over the last several seasons. But this season they have proven to be an advantage over most teams. Jamal Crawford has continued his unstoppable scoring and Austin Rivers has improved his ability to drive into the paint. But the Clippers also added relevant talent to their bench. Marreese Speights has been a huge scoring piece off the bench and Raymond Felton has contributed on both ends.

The Clippers have continued their usual offensive game and found defensive dominance throughout their first ten games. With a great offensive and defensive scheme this truly could be the Los Angeles Clippers first season with a Western Conference Finals appearance or better.
