The Los Angeles Rams went all in not too long ago.
They won a Super Bowl during that time, and the bills have come due since then. However, the team has responded well, and their young corps is playing well ahead of schedule. Furthermore, Sean McVay continues to coach up talent at an exceptional level.
But one larger issue remains the most important. Naturally, the quarterback is the most important position. Matthew Stafford also brought a ring during his tenure. Regardless, the franchise needs to start seriously looking for his replacement, with or without an extension for him.
According to Greg Beacham of the AP, Coach McVay expressed the desire to have a decision for the current starter “sooner than later.”
The issued statement makes sense. It’s difficult to live in a perpetual limbo of whether someone may or may not be a part of the roster moving forward. Of course, the Rams would prefer for Stafford to return. But it’s easier to make immediate plans if they hear within the week or so. This is especially true if he elects to hang it up.
It’s a difficult choice for the long-time signal caller, and a level of latitude would likely be given. But the latest from the HC himself indicates they’d rather not have this turn into a lengthy conversation, like the one we see with some debating about making another run at it. Another go with the former Georgia Bulldog would work. As is, they nearly made it to the NFC Championship Game.
However, this LA organization needs to make the pivot, even if the same player leads the charge on offense next season. Under Coach McVay, this team will never bottom out for a top pick. Therefore, they’ll miss out on the most talented prospects each year. Regardless, even first-round selections are far from a certainty. Moreover, plenty of later-round picks end up becoming starters in this league.
Combine the likelihood of adding more games and the usual season-long injury concerns at every position. Building depth in the most critical area becomes essential. It’s also worth noting that most quarterbacks need time to develop and would benefit from sitting instead of playing as a rookie anyway. It only makes sense for the Los Angeles Rams to take a chance on someone later and see if they find a gem later on during the draft.

It’s more important than ever to get depth at all positions.
This is particularly true in a close division or Wild Card race. Teams need someone who can come in for a stint and carry the offense when the starter misses games. Certain rosters are fundamentally sound across the board and can eke out wins, as long as the decision-making isn’t atrocious from the most important person on the field at any given time.
Combine this with Coach McVay’s ability, and anyone’s potential will get the best possible chance of seeing success. If Stafford elects to move on from the game, then it’s something of a no-brainer to make a more serious move. But assuming that he’s back in uniform for now, the franchise should do what’s best in either case. Finally, this provides security so that the team doesn’t necessarily need to have a similar conversation year after year.
There are plenty of overlooked talents in each draft. If Stafford has a harder time deciding next year, the Los Angeles Rams would at least have something of a contingency plan in place. Someone like Kurtis Rourke or Riley Leonard will be available well after Roger Goodell has left the stage.
Unless there’s a clear need filled, take a chance on someone, even if you have an established guy.
