Mark Cuban Says Westbrook Is No MVP Candidate

on

Having one of the most historic seasons in league history, Russell Westbrook is currently on pace to average a triple-double for the season. Since the All-Star break, Westbrook is averaging 37 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists per game. Making him a certain MVP candidate…

But Mark Cuban, Dallas Mavericks owner, believes that only two people should be mere candidates, and that’s LeBron James and James Harden.

Before the Mavericks 104-89 win over the Thunder last night, Cuban spoke to reporters prior to the game. Per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Cuban said that Westbrook isn’t even in the mix.

Cuban has even taken it a step further by letting Westbrook know of the requirements, to Cuban, to be considered for the award. “But the criteria is the criteria — 50 games and a playoff series. He just has to do it once,” Cuban told DWAIN PRICE of the Star-Telegram.

Yikes!! What did Westbrook ever do to Cuban? Also, this is not the first time Cuban has been tough on Westbrook. Last year, during the first round of the playoffs, Cuban turned heads when he said Westbrook wasn’t even a superstar in the league.

Cuban said that on that Thunder team, Durant was the only superstar on the team. When asked about it, Durant said, “He’s an idiot. He’s an idiot.”

Just last night, even though Westbrook is having a season for the ages, Cuban still believes that Westbrook is not a superstar.
Eddie Sefko of Sportsday-DallasNews quoted Cuban giving his take on what a superstar does for his team:
“You got to win 50 games and a playoff series. It’s impressive, don’t get me wrong. It’s incredible. He’s unstoppable in his own way. But the criteria (are) the criteria. There are lots of rewards for individual accomplishments. But it’s a team game. That’s not to take anything away from Russ. It would be no fun if I changed my mind.”

One thing is certain, nobody can take away from the level of greatness that Westbrook has showcased this season.
