Mayo, Patriots Embrace No-Days-Off Mentality Ahead of 2025

With a record of 3-10 heading into their bye week, the New England Patriots and their fans don’t have much to look forward to until the end of the season.

But with the offseason just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to think ahead and gear up for the 2025 season.

Head coach Jerod Mayo agrees. Mayo recently appeared on WEEI, where the former Pro Bowler explained that there are no days off.

“That’s part of this [bye] week for me,” Mayo said. As much as you want to go on a beach and chill out, we just don’t have time to do that from a coaching or from a scouting perspective. This time is for us to reflect and kinda address those questions.”

Ever since Tom Brady left the organization following the 2019 season, the Patriots have lacked the most important element for attracting free agents— a franchise quarterback.

Rookie quarterback Drake Maye has impressed fans in New England and across the league. The third overall pick has just eight career starts to his name, but his highlight-worthy plays and ability to elevate an offense have been displayed in 2024.

According to OverTheCap, a website used to calculate salary-cap space for NFL teams, the Patriots will have over $132 million in cap room going into the 2025 season— by far the most in the league. As a young team with money to spend and the quarterback position seemingly covered, New England will have its best free-agent pitch in a long time.

Not only do the Patriots have the financial resources to accelerate their rebuild, but the team will also possess highly valued draft capital.

New England has the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Even if they win out, it’s hard to imagine the Patriots falling out of the top ten. After hitting on their top pick last year, general manager Elliot Wolf has the chance to strike gold two years in a row.

Despite New England’s lack of success on the field this year, the franchise has the potential to turn their potential into results during the offseason. Perhaps if New England makes the right moves, the articles coming out around this time next year will feature the Patriots in the playoff picture.
