Super Bowl LIX resulted in a Philadelphia Eagles victory.
Jalen Hurts won the game’s MVP, deservingly so. The quarterback played well toward the end of the regular season and in the playoffs. But a lot of people are acknowledging the role of the defense.
It doesn’t work like this, but if the award could have been given to a unit, that side of the ball would have a case. More importantly, Philly’s defense has been excellent all year long. Their excellence led to a rare feat, and the franchise showed the world what matters most.
Numbers don’t say everything, but being at the top of many statistical categories is a good sign. This Philadelphia Eagles team accomplished something for only the fifth time since the NFL merger. The champions ranked number one in opponent points per game, opponent total yards per game, and opponent yards per play.
The combined NFL and AFL league has existed for over 50 years, showing how special this unit has been in historical context. But it’s even more impressive considering the overall tide throughout the league. Many focus on QB production and wide receiver receptions. This is prevalent in fan circles and front offices alike.
But the Philly organization doubled down, zigging while others zagged. It started with the hire of Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator who undoubtedly positively impacted his first year in the role.
His unit allowed a league-best 18.1 points per game. People continue to debate Hurts’ place in the quarterback hierarchy.
Strong Suit for Philadelphia Eagles Remained Consistent Throughout
The fact remains that a lot of weeks saw a struggling passing game.
But the wins came, in large part, due to the other phase. This defense kept the Philadelphia Eagles in games and forced numerous timely turnovers. At a league-best 4.8 yards per play against, their opponents were forced to drive the field repeatedly. The rules and style of today’s NFL favor the offense. But even then, forcing the other team to execute throughout a game proves difficult.
The ability of this unit allowed the offense to figure itself out throughout the year. And when all else failed, the game could be sealed through a big run by Saquon Barkley. But this is again only possible through Coach Fangio’s system. He kept other QBs at bay and forced others out of what they were hoping to do within their game plan.
This shows that the offense obviously needs to score points, but making life difficult for the other side can give teams leeway. It’s worth noting this is easier said than done. It takes a great defensive mind in Coach Fangio and star players, particularly in the trenches. Either way, this shows a different approach from current conventional wisdom. This franchise has some tough choices to make. But the Philadelphia Eagles won a Lombardi with their defense leading the way. Expect them to stick with that formula.
Other teams with strong personnel on that side could feel emboldened to double down after watching one team win it all like that.
