The 76ers have a lot of cap space this offseason, and they intend to use it. Kevin Smith reported the Sixers are expected to offer free agent shooting guard J.J. Redick a 1-2 year deal worth up to $25 million a year.
This news came after Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Redick would be meeting with Philadelphia when free agency officially began.
The Sixers have a young team with most of their core having never played an NBA game together and are in search of veteran leadership. They were previously reportedly interested in Patty Mills, but perhaps trading for the number one pick in the draft changed that for them. At any rate – Mills just re-signed with San Antonio, so he wouldn’t have made it to Philly anyway.
After reporting the Sixers’ interest in making an offer to Redick, Kevin Smith reported they won’t be giving up on adding new talent if Redick doesn’t sign. They will reportedly go on to make offer sheets to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and potentially Otto Porter Jr. as well.
With so little cap space used in recent years, Philly can make pretty big offers to free agents this summer. And with talented players like Jimmy Butler, Paul George, and Jeff Teague moving west, this could be the first time in awhile the Sixers could make a push for the playoffs.
