Bucks Lead Season Review #2: Jason Terry

The Jet has now touched down for the 19th time.

Drafted in 1999, Jason Terry has been through a lot, and he doesn’t intend to hang it up yet:

Let’s take a look on Jet’s numbers through two seasons in Milwaukee:

2016-17: 4.1 PPG (43% FG, 43% 3Pt, 83% FT), 1.4 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.6 SPG, 18.4 MPG

2017-18: 3.3 PPG (38% FG, 35% 3Pt, 89% FT), 0.9 RPG, 1.2 APG, 0.8 SPG, 16.0 MPG

Jet’s numbers took a slight decline from the 2016-17 campaign, but this isn’t surprising, given the heavy distribution of guards on this Bucks team (Bledsoe, Brogdon, Delly, Snell, Brown, Jennings). Jet appeared in 51 games (4 starts) this season, down from 74 a year ago. Jet still had his opportunities to shine, starting in four games this season after injuries to Malcolm Brogdon and Matthew Dellavedova freed up a large amount of playing time for the 40-year-old.

Terry is now one season away from meeting his goal of playing 20 NBA seasons. His veteran presence is intangible as it gets, and any team would be lucky to have this presence. Is he a top offensive threat like he was in Dallas? No. Is he a 30 minutes per game guy anymore? No. (Well, he did hit 30+ minutes three times this season). Nonetheless, high production isn’t necessary for what Jet brings to the table as a veteran role player.

Jet is well liked by everyone on the team, but his potential third season in Milwaukee will likely be determined by the next head coaching selection. I envision this decision will be a no brainer, given the Bucks’ cap situation. Jet provides a necessary veteran presence on the bench, for the veterans’ minimum salary. Both of Terry’s one-year contracts with the Bucks were signed in the late summer months (August 2016 and September 2017), so don’t expect a decision any time soon. Contrary to last summer, the Bucks have A LOT of decisions to make (head coach, draft, Jabari’s complex situation, etc.) that will push Terry’s contract renewal near the bottom of the priority list.

I hope he stays in Milwaukee, regardless of what others think. His bench antics are hilarious, and everyone feeds off his charismatic energy and personality.
