Sonia Citron Already Playing Like a Veteran

Sonia Citron may be a rookie, but she plays like a 10-year veteran.

Players around the league admire Citron’s poise on the court. Sabrina Ionescu called Citron one of her favorite rookies in this draft class and sees a lot of herself in her.

Citron’s Shooting

Always known for her shooting ability, Citron was hitting well above 50% from the field and 40% from three over the first five games of this season. As of June 19, Citron is shooting 47% from the field, 34.8% from 3-point range, and 85.7% from the free throw line.

These numbers remain very impressive for a rookie. The only WNBA player to have a 50-40-90 shooting season was Elena Delle Donne, who was a Washington Mystic when she achieved this feat in 2019.

EDD also won MVP and led the Mystics to a championship that season. Sonia Citron could become the first rookie and second player ever to accomplish it.

She is also the first rookie this season to score 100 points. Her teammate, Kiki Iriafen became the second rookie to join the 100-point club by rookies this season.

Additionally, Citron (13.4) and Iriafen (14.6) are among the top three rookie scorers in the league in points per game alongside Paige Bueckers (17.4).

Clutch

Citron is also playing the second-most minutes per game for a rookie this season, at 31.4. Coach Sydney Johnson trusts the rookie down the stretch.

Citron has made good decisions, hitting clutch shots, and is willing to take on the tough assignments on defense.

Former coach at Notre Dame, Niele Ivey, thinks Citron can win Rookie of the Year. With her production, the third overall pick in the 2025 draft is showing that she should be in the conversation.

Playing amazing basketball and becoming a favorite amongst the Mystics fanbase, Citron has all the makings of a star.
