Spurs Reportedly Interested In Rudy Gay

It’s beginning to look like the San Antonio Spurs are going to be very active this summer in free agency. Following weeks of speculation about acquiring First All-Defense Team and perennial All-Star Chris Paul, and among rumors of interest in a slew of other point guards – the Spurs are reportedly going to at least test the waters with free agent swingman Rudy Gay.

Jabari Young first tweeted about Gay’s name beginning to surface “as free agency approaches” in connection with San Antonio. Young also pointed out that Gay is currently in Austin rehabilitating following a season-ending Achilles injury he suffered in January last season.

Prior to his injury, Gay was having a fairly good season. He averaged 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game in 30 games. He was also shooting 37.2% from beyond the arc, his highest three-point percentage since he was with Memphis in 2010-11.

San Antonio is also very active in the point guard market, so it remains to be seen if they’ll have the money to offer Gay a nice deal. It’s very possible he takes a pay cut for the chance to compete for a title, he hasn’t played in the postseason since 2012.

Gay is currently 30 years old so this could be either his last chance to get big money or his last chance to play a big part in a team’s playoff run. It will be interesting to see if anything comes of the Spurs’ reported interest in him.
