In an unexpected and shocking move, the Phoenix Suns have fired General Manager Ryan McDonough Monday morning, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.
The timing of this is quite odd as we are less than 10 days away from the start of the NBA season. McDonough has no doubt had his ups and downs and his share of detractors. However, he was starting to put together a solid plan and a quality roster. Finally, the Suns’ faithful was beginning to feel excited after a few years. This firing in the middle of the pre-season was indeed unexpected to say the least.
Suns owner Robert Sarver does not have a great resume as a NBA owner yet. Unfortunately for him, this move raises more questions than answers as Woj explains below:
Sarver may have to hire a great candidate quickly and restore some faith among the Suns fans. This news today was perplexing even to the staunchest critics of GM McDonough. If Sarver is not decisive and quick here, there is a real risk of the franchise becoming a permanent punch-line.
Most importantly for the Suns, McDonough’s first pick from this summer, Deandre Ayton, is looking great this pre-season. Consequently, we sure hope the team on the court becomes the news story in a positive way for the Phoenix Suns starting next week.
