In the Wizards’ second preseason game, they turned the ball over a whopping 3o times in a 94-117 loss to the Knicks.
The Knicks had 16 steals and only turned the ball over eight times. The Wizards’ lack of a true point guard is a big part of his high number of turnovers.
Jordan Poole committed five. Kyle Kuzma had four. Five more players committed three. Poole is a scoring guard and can be turnover-prone at times. That comes with being a player who has the responsibility of being the guy to run the offense. The entire team needs to simplify the game by making simple plays and not looking to hit the home run.
Who can be the floor general?
The Wizards need a guard to get the team into the offense.
Someone can make the game easier for the youth. Malcolm Brogdon can help with some, as he averaged 5.5 assists last year with the Portland Trail Blazers. He averaged 7 assists in his first season with the Indiana Pacers. The Wizards are coming g off a stretch of having two of the greatest assist-to-turnover ratio guards ever with Tyus Jones (2023-24) and Monte Morris (2022-23). They would’ve been the ideal point guards for this type of team. Both are now with the Phoenix Suns alongside former Wizards great, Bradley Beal.
If Brian Keefe wants to have this team run fast, they must learn to take care of the basketball. Maybe someone can be traded to help run the offense. Lonzo Ball will probably be available for trade during the season. The Spurs have a lot of guards right now, maybe they can trade Tyus’ younger brother Tre Jones to the Wizards. Whatever the case, the Wizards need a floor general to help the development curve of this young core.
