The New York Giants’ Tyrone Tracy Jr. has been making waves during his rookie season.
Born in November of 1999, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Tracy showcased his versatility early at Decatur Central High School. Tracy was a dual-threat on offense, racking up over 1,400 rushing yards and 1,100 receiving yards in his senior year. Despite being rated as a three-star recruit, he committed as a wide receiver at the University of Iowa.
College Career: Adapting to New Challenges
As a receiver for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Tracy began his collegiate career with strong athleticism and skill that was apparent soon after arriving on campus.
In 2019, he recorded 36 receptions for 589 yards and three touchdowns. As a result, Tracy transferred to Purdue University in 2022 to take on a more prominent role in the offense. During his time with the Boilermakers, he transitioned from being a wide receiver to a running back, embracing the new role with enthusiasm. As a senior, he was a valuable part of Purdue’s offense. He ran for over 700 yards with eight touchdowns and caught 19 passes for 132 yards, proving his ability as a rusher & pass catcher.
High-risk, High-reward
The New York Giants selected Tracy in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, recognizing his versatility and playmaking potential.
It’s common for teams to select uber-athletic guys with high-risk, high-reward payoffs in later rounds of the draft. He quickly proved his worth, especially after Giants superstar Saquon Barkley and the team could not come to terms this offseason. In a breakout game against the Seattle Seahawks, Tracy rushed for 129 yards on 18 carries. He showcased his speed and vision in the open field. Giants’ fans and analysts alike saw Tracy as a critical asset to the Giants’ offense. His recent performances have solidified him as the team’s starting RB ahead of Devin Singletary.
Rising to the Challenge
Tracy’s rookie season is a testament to his dedication and work ethic.
Over the first eight games, he led the Giants with 89 carries for 422 rushing yards. He has maintained an impressive average of 5.0 yards per carry. He’s also rushed for two touchdowns. His performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he ran for 145 yards and scored a thrilling 45-yard touchdown, solidified his reputation as a player with big play potential. Starting the season on the bench behind six-year NFL veteran RB Devin Singeltary, Tracy’s role was extremely limited. But once the rookie got running, teams found it extremely difficult to stop him.

Despite a concussion during the Steelers game, Tracy cleared protocols and returned to play the following week. His seamless transition from college to professional football has been marked by his ability to adapt, filling key roles as needed and consistently delivering under pressure. Entering Week 10 of the NFL season, Tracy has replaced Singeltary. With some injuries to some key receivers, he’s become an even more integral part of the offense.
Tracy had a very favorable matchup this week in Munich against the Panthers in a 20-17 loss. He was successful against the weak Panthers’ defense, a defense that gave one of their best defensive players in Brian Burns to the Giants this offseason. The Panthers have given up the most rushing yards per game to opponents, as well as the most rushing TD.. Tracy finished with 18 carries for 103 yards and a TD, further solidifying his consistency on a stagnant Giants offense.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. has proven to be more than just a backup or versatile player—he’s emerging as a potential cornerstone for the Giants.
His journey, from a high school mid-level recruit, a position change in college, to becoming a key contributor in the NFL, highlights his adaptability and determination.
