While the Golden State Warriors’ calling card over the years has largely been their motion-heavy, high-powered offense, having one of the league’s top defenses has also been a crucial factor in their success.
By all accounts, Gary Payton II, a long-time defensive staple on the Warriors’ roster, is likely set to part ways with the team this offseason, suggesting the Dubs could be in the market for a serviceable point-of-attack wing defender in the immediate future.
Taking a look around the league’s free agent marketplace, perhaps one of the most intriguing players still available is former Charlotte Hornets guard Josh Okogie. The Warriors should seriously consider bringing him on board to fill this role within their roster.
Why Should Golden State Consider Signing Josh Okogie?
Since entering the league as the 20th overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft, Josh Okogie has earned himself a reputation for being a tenacious, versatile perimeter defender.
The 26-year-old possesses exceptional athleticism and an elite on-court motor, which, when paired with his high-level defensive abilities, has allowed him to carve out a respectable role across his multiple stops in the association.
If inserted into Golden State’s lineup, Okogie would fill the void left by Payton’s departure and inject some youthful, scrappy defensive energy into a Dubs unit top-heavy with aging superstars.
While his offensive game leaves a bit to be desired, Okogie profiles as a serviceable defensive stopper with the ability to provide valuable rotational minutes to a legitimate title-contending team night in and night out off the bench. This makes him exactly the piece Golden State should be on the hunt for this offseason.
A Culture Fit
The Warriors have always been known for their gritty and tough defensive unit. Okogie’s high-energy, blue-collar play style would likely complement the Warriors’ defensive principles well. At least on paper, a tough-nosed, physical presence like Okogie taking the floor alongside elite defenders such as Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green would almost certainly be a nightmare for opposing lineups.
Add in that Okogie proved his ability to perform at a dependable level in the postseason during the Phoenix Suns’ 2023 playoff campaign, and it’s easy to see why Okogie should appear as an attractive free agent target to a Warriors’ front office looking to push their team back into title contention.
The Bottom Line
Unfortunately for Golden State, a player of Okogie’s caliber is likely to draw much interest around the association, and it would be fair to assume teams will be lining up to acquire his services.

That being said, with their current financial situation in mind, the Warriors could likely offer Okogie either a mid-level exception or a veteran minimum deal should they so choose to pursue the seven-year NBA veteran.
Either way, while it likely wouldn’t be the flashiest move of the offseason, the Golden State Warriors adding a talented defensive stopper such as Josh Okogie is certainly the move that could help make them tougher to match up against in a cutthroat Western Conference.
