Welcome to the “Watchability stakes” – a ranking of the weekly matchups ahead in the NFL. Games are tiered based on three factors: narrative, implications and general intrigue. You will be seeing The Lead’s NFL game watchability rankings at the start of the week to get you ready for football action.
The 2024 NFL officially reached the halfway mark last weekend. So too has The Lead’s weekly “Watchability stakes” series.
Week 10 comes at a pivotal point in the NFL calendar for many teams in the league. The current eight division leaders eye trying to hold on to the top spot as more divisional games arrive in the back half of the schedule. Plenty of teams with high and low preseason expectations remain in the middle of some pretty crowded standings in the AFC and NFC. For the few stuck at the bottom of the barrel, Week 10 marks a point of no return if the season outlook can’t be changed.
All those stakes make this week’s “Watchability stakes” pretty significant – just two games are in the absolute bottom tier, while nine of the 14 games in Week 10 rank in Tier 3 or higher (including six in the top two).
Which games rank toward the top of this week’s list? Here are your “Watchability stakes” for Week 10:
Tier 1: Absolutely can’t miss
Detroit Lions (7-1) versus Houston Texans (6-3) – Sunday @ 8:20 pm EST
- A premier Sunday Night Football game sees two division leaders from opposite conferences in what is a battle of the inner circle of Super Bowl contenders. Detroit winning could cement the Lions as the undisputed favorite in the NFC, while Houston is looking to add a significant out-of-conference win to its resume.
Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) versus Washington Commanders (7-2) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST
- Arguably the highlight of the early-afternoon window, although the game below is equally good for different reasons. Narrative wins this matchup: both teams started the season with unsure expectations. Now, they’re at the top of their division ranks like the game above.
San Francisco 49ers (4-4) versus Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-5) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST
- You’ll rarely see two teams with .500-ish records in Tier 1, but considering the high-stakes playoff implications (specifically with record and tie-breaking scenario), neither team wants to stay or drop below-.500 heading into the second half of the NFL calendar.
Cincinnati Bengals (4-5) versus Baltimore Ravens (6-3) – Thursday @ 8:15 pm EST
- Another quality nighttime game sneaks its way into Tier 1. Bonus points for not only being a divisional matchup, but a rematch of one of the more entertaining games from earlier this season. To top it off: major division standings and playoff seeding implications will manifest later during the winter.
Tier 2: This could be fun
Denver Broncos (5-4) versus Kansas City Chiefs (8-0) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST
- Denver’s lackluster effort at an upset last week versus Baltimore leaves this game in an interesting spot on the Watchability stakes. If the offense can do just enough, that could keep the score close just enough.
Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) versus Dallas Cowboys (3-5) – Sunday @ 4:25 pm EST
- Dallas’ season is in “now or never” territory and a win versus the Eagles at home could put the Cowboys back in the playoff hunt. Philly boasts an impressive record but has won several close games, including last week versus Jacksonville.
Tier 3: Decent floor, high upside
New York Jets (3-6) versus Arizona Cardinals (5-4) – Sunday @ 4:25 pm EST
- Arizona hopes its recent surge to get above .500. can keep up at home in a pretty interesting matchup against the Jets. Is New York’s season over or does a win finally bring morale up?
Miami Dolphins (2-6) versus Los Angeles Rams (4-4) – Monday @ 8:15 pm EST
- It’s hard to believe Miami should be Tier 3 considering the 2-6 record, but the Dolphins did play Buffalo well and have another shot at a quality team playing well right now. Los Angeles continues to produce wins after a tough start and has another chance to cement itself as a playoff-caliber team with a win.
Tennessee Titans (2-6) versus Los Angeles Chargers (5-3) – Sunday @ 4:05 pm EST
- Like the game above, Tennessee’s record wouldn’t make the Titans worthy in most weeks. Considering Tennessee can at least be competitive and the stakes for Los Angeles, there is some upside for this to be a close and entertaining game.
Tier 4: It could always be worse
Minnesota Vikings (6-2) versus Jacksonville Jaguars (2-7) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST
- Similar playbook to last week: can Jacksonville play spoiler on its home turf versus another of the NFC’s best teams this year?
New England Patriots (2-7) versus Chicago Bears (4-4) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST
- Chicago desperately needs a win, but New England’s fight in recent close games means there’s a chance this could be a close one.
Buffalo Bills (7-2) versus Indianapolis Colts (4-5) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST
- Buffalo should be a favorite yet again, but Indianapolis has shown an ability to play some tough opponents close when things are going right.
Tier 5: Snooze Fest
Atlanta Falcons (6-3) versus New Orleans Saints (2-7) – Sunday @ 1 pm EST
- Atlanta’s hot start comes at an unfortunate time for New Orleans, who’s coming off a really poor loss to Carolina and continues to fall in the standings.
New York Giants (2-7) versus Carolina Panthers (2-7) – Sunday @ 9:30 am EST
- Thank goodness this game is so early in the morning.
