The 2025-2026 NFL trade deadline was absolutely wild. In one of the busiest deadlines ever; teams like the Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks made deals to become true contenders, acquiring Sauce Gardner and Rashid Shaheed, respectively. Even powerhouse teams like the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens bolstered their roster, with the Eagles adding Jaire Alexander and Jaelan Phillips and the Ravens adding Dre’Mont Jones.
One team, the 7-2 New England Patriots, were not buyers at the deadline, choosing to leave the trade deadline as sellers.
As the trade deadline loomed in late October, the Patriots made a pair of trades to offload underused defensive players Kyle Dugger and Keion White. They dealt Dugger and a seventh-round pick to the Steelers for a sixth-round pick, and White to the 49ers for a sixth and seventh-round pick.
Patriots Powering Forward
The Patriots are in the midst of their best start since 2019, when they finished 12-4, with quarterback Drake Maye playing like an MVP this season. The second-year UNC product has over 2,000 yards, 17 touchdowns, and is leading the league with a 74.1 completion percentage. He has fostered great connections with Hunter Henry, Kayshon Boutte, and free-agent signing Stefon Diggs.
Along with a defense that hasn’t allowed more than 50 yards to any running back this season, the Patriots are off to a hot start. Due to that, many were expecting the Patriots to make moves at the deadline to upgrade a few holes on the roster.
What Are the Patriots Missing?
In the brief absence of Boutte, the team could have used another wide receiver, as the play of third-stringers DeMario Douglas and Mack Hollins has been inconsistent at best.
Some of the WRs on the market included Jaylen Waddle, Chris Olave, and a familiar face in Jakobi Meyers. The latter would have been a welcome edition back in New England, as the former Patriot has developed even more since arriving in Las Vegas. Meyers would have become one of the Pats’ best receivers again, but this time with more mouths to feed than in 2022.
Starting RB Rhamondre Stevenson has also had a shaky start to the season, with three touchdowns and three fumbles. Given Antonio Gibson‘s ACL injury and Ohio State rookie TreVeyon Henderson being kept on a leash, the Pats could have benefited from another RB on the roster.
Some of the RBs on the trade block included Tony Pollard, Alvin Kamara, and Breece Hall. While the chances of the Patriots trading in the division were small, they could have benefited from the veteran presence of someone like Kamara, who would have also provided some receiving upside lost after the Gibson injury.
Ultimately, the solution to the RB issue is to play Henderson more, but until Vrabel does so, practice squad member Terrell Jennings will have to step up.
Some other holes on the roster could have been patched, like edge rusher and safety, but the Patriots’ willingness to deal the aforementioned White and Dugger indicated they felt okay with their depth at those positions.
Why Didn’t New England Make a Move?
So the big question is, why didn’t the Patriots acquire any players at the deadline?
For a team that was always hesitant to make deadline deals under Belichick, why didn’t Vrabel and the front office go all in?
The answer to this question is quite complicated. For starters, the Patriots are 7-2, however, they also had the third-easiest strength of schedule entering the season. They have done their job of beating up on bad teams like the Titans and Browns, and have won big games against the Bills and Falcons, but the problem remains the same. What’s going to happen if they get into the playoffs and have to play more experienced teams like the Chiefs and Bills?
Big trade deadline acquisitions would help to answer that question, but ultimately, the Patriots might just not be there yet. While they have had a great start to the season and are looking to have a successful end as well, they don’t have a lot of playoff experience.
Young Patriots Not Ready Yet
Maye and the offense have looked great, but he’s still only in his second year and has a lot of development to undergo. Vrabel and the front office may not want to buy in completely, considering the team is still young. There is no point in selling away high draft picks for rental players in a season where the playoffs are going to be fueled with juggernauts like Kansas City and Indianapolis.
So, to answer the question of “why didn’t the Patriots buy at the deadline,” my theory is that they do not want to sell away what looks to be a bright future for some rental players, in a season that can very easily end in the first round.
It’s a harsh reality for fans, but something they’ll have to face if New England sees a team like the Bills, Ravens or Chargers in the playoffs.
