Following last Saturday’s loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels, Duke Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski said “I think we’ll get Zion back for Thursday.” Thursday marks the start of the ACC tournament and the Blue Devils can’t wait for the return of the prodigal son. However, this begs the question; should he return at all? Zion was injured in a freak-like accident when his shoe literally exploded on the court back on February 20th against UNC.
The incident sent the everyone into a frenzy. It also revived the age-old question, “Should college athletes be paid?” People then started to question if the projected #1 overall pick should even risk his health– sitting the remainder of the season out. Coming from a Tar Heels fan, it would be disappointing if we didn’t get to see the best player in the game during March Madness.
One Shining Moment
After the ACC tournament concludes, the start of March Madness begins! Williamson would once again be alongside fellow projected lottery picks R.J. Barrett, and Cam Reddish. With the imminent return of Williamson, the Blue Devils open up as +275 favorites to win the tournament (per SportsBetting.ag). Competing for a National Championship, let alone winning one is one of the greatest achievements for a basketball player. If Williamson were to forgo his one and only season, he would be missing that opportunity.
Although him sitting wouldn’t effect his draft stock, it would definitely affect his teammates. Zion strikes me as the kind of person who wants to be there for his teammates through thick and thin. March Madness without Zion would be doing an injustice to the basketball world.
