Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm is
suing his parents for allegedly misusing his money, according to the Associated Press. Bohm filed the lawsuit a little over a month ago, and with the case still wide open and many questions left unanswered, Phillies fans have noticed a steep decline in Bohm’s production.
Bohm’s parents, Lisa and Daniel, were given 10% stakes in Bohm’s four financial accounts. Allegedly, Bohm’s parents refused to give him access to said accounts. However, upon further inspection, Bohm found that millions of dollars had been transferred to a personal account. The lawsuit claims the money was used for personal expenses.
As a result, Bohm
fired his agent, is seeking a return of over $500,000, wants three million dollars in damages, and wants complete control of all of his financial accounts.
All of this occurred just before the MLB season began. Bohm has been very quiet about any personal matters, saying, “I’m not going to address any personal matters right now.”
How Is Bohm Playing?
Since the lawsuit was first filed, Alec Bohm has had a very poor statistical start. In 126 at-bats, he’s hitting .159 with one home run, 15 RBI’s, and a .433 OPS. Whether or not the personal matters have anything to do with this is purely speculation, but to draw that conclusion is more than fair.
Bohm has always struggled with emotions and temper. His first major outbreak in Philadelphia occurred back in April of 2022 when he was
seen on camera mouthing the words, “I *expletive* hate this place.”
Bohm had struggled mightily up to this point, and this came after a third error on his part at third base. What resulted, however, was a standing ovation from Phillies fans that showed support, love, and understanding.
Since then, Bohm has had his ups and downs, but was overall a solid player with good hitting and good enough defense to warrant keeping him around. Still, his temper has remained a constant issue.
This time, however, fans aren’t seeing the raw emotions coming out. Instead, they’re seeing a very quiet, meek-looking Bohm having poor at-bats and silently phasing into the background.
The Results
Bohm went from batting fourth in the lineup at cleanup to hovering around the seventh or eighth spot. Fans have speculated that the Phillies could send Bohm to the minor leagues or Designated for Assignment if things do not improve.
With the lawsuit still ongoing, Bohm has a lot of things happening at once. He’s on a contract year with his future in Philadelphia seeming grim.
Could Things Get Better?
Following the firing of Rob Thomson, Bohm hit a walk-off sac fly against the San Francisco Giants. If he can put together a small hitting/RBI streak, he, like the rest of the Phillies, could see the start of a bounce-back. Unfortunately, though, Bohm has still yet to find a groove, and new manager Don Mattingly removed him from the starting lineup of the series finale against the A’s on May 7.
Things look shaky, but not completely hopeless for the Phillies’ third baseman.
