Late at night on June 22, the Miami Heat made a blockbuster trade to acquire Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo after months of anticipation. The trade received mixed reviews from the media, despite pressure for Heat President Pat Riley and the front office to land a star player.

Full Details of the Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade

  • Miami Heat Receive: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis
  • Milwaukee Bucks Receive: Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakučionis, No. 13 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft (Nate Ament), two future first-round picks, one future pick swap, and one future second-round pick

Breaking Down What the Miami Heat Acquired

Giannis Antetokounmpo headlined the trade, bringing offensive and defensive dominance and a much-needed size boost to the frontcourt. He will be the tallest standard-contract player on the Heat at 6-foot-11. Giannis becomes eligible to sign an extension on Oct. 1, but he will likely wait until Jan. 6, when more lucrative options open up for him.

Giannis will pair up with franchise player Bam Adebayo to dominate in the paint — the Greek Freak averaged 27.6 points on 62.4% shooting last season. The duo have been friends for several years and even have the same agent, Alex Saratsis. Just days after the trade, they were spotted in the gym working out together.

An unexpected addition to the trade for Miami was forward Bobby Portis, who brings efficient scoring off the bench. Portis averaged 13.7 points on 48.8% shooting this season and was a part of the Bucks’ 2021 championship team. The Heat used Duncan Robinson‘s trade exception to obtain Portis alongside Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo and Portis, coming in as strong veteran frontcourt veterans, will be huge for struggling players like Nikola Jović. After a workout in Las Vegas, Jović was asked how he felt about the trade: “I’m really happy. Obviously, not only because I’m going to share the court and play with [Antetokounmpo], but I’m also happy that I’m going to be able to learn from one of the greatest power forwards ever.”

Benefits for the Heat: Players

Tyler Herro was involved in every Miami Heat trade rumor for years. As much as he was effective when on the court, he wasn’t always available. In just this year alone, he’s had injuries to his foot, ankle, toe, quad, and ribs, which resulted in only 33 games played. Herro’s injury-proneness posed a huge detriment to the Heat over the years.

Another positive is pairing an already developed big with Bam, rather than worrying about Kel’el Ware‘s development. As much as Ware is a rising talent, Adebayo is in his prime now and needs to be with another star in his prime, making Giannis an ideal candidate.

The media has mixed opinions about the trade. Many who feel negatively about it feel that the Heat traded too much to get Giannis. While four active players might seem excessive, Giannis Antetokounmpo is one of the top stars in the league, and trading for another star of a similar rank would cost just as much. The Heat can now build a team specifically for Giannis and Bam more freely.

Benefits for the Heat: Money

Antetokounmpo’s contract for the 2026-2027 season is approximately $58.5 million. The combined salary package that the Heat sends out is roughly $47.5 million, which doesn’t include what the Heat would’ve paid Nate Ament. The trade only costs the Heat about $11 million of the approximate $64 million of cap space that they would’ve used to go after a star anyway.

Additionally, the Heat’s final trade package only targeted Antetokounmpo. Bobby Portis never came up in the trade rumors originally, so if anything, the trade became more balanced since the speculations. Since Miami used Duncan Robinson’s trade exception to get Portis, the Heat essentially got two of the Bucks’ top-5 scorers for the price of one.

Heat Stand Above the Previous Criticism

Previously, the media called out Pat Riley for not being able to land a star player that would make the Heat a top contender. Since 2022, Miami’s finished as a play-in team every season — they did manage to make a run from the play-in to the NBA Finals in 2023. The Charlotte Hornets eliminated the Heat before the playoffs in this year’s Play-In Tournament. This kind of mediocrity ultimately led to last year’s Jimmy Butler breakup.

Back at the February trade deadline, it seemed that Riley failed again to get Bam help by not getting Giannis. Yet, now that he finally fulfilled the promise of landing a star, there is still backlash. Despite the opposing opinions, Riley refers to the trade as “one of the great trades in Heat history.”

The trade ultimately transforms the Heat into a win-now team, maximizing Adebayo in his prime by partnering him with fully developed bigs like Antetokounmpo and Portis. Miami will now use the remainder of their cap money and trade exceptions to finalize a team around Giannis and Bam to hopefully bring a championship back to the 305 once again.
