The 2018 offseason has been one of the most exciting offseasons since LeBron’s initial decision in 2010. Many players and coaches landed deals with new teams. Some players remained loyal to their respective teams, and there have been some eyebrow-raising trades. One of the most highly anticipated changes this offseason occurred when LeBron James decided to go west, to LA. Now, many teams in the Eastern Conference are looking to compete on another level with the best player in the league now playing for the other side. One of those teams looking to capitalize are the Detroit Pistons, but fans must wonder if they have what it takes to compete.
The Pistons recently hired former Raptors head coach, Dwane Casey, after parting ways with Stan Van Gundy. However, the Pistons front office is still somewhat in shambles. The team remains without a General Manager and a Team President. Not having either could play a crucial role in an unsuccessful season for the Pistons. They’ll need a GM/President to help with any future roster changes (i.e. trades, signings, releases). If the team could hire an official GM/President, it’ll be one step closer to competing at the next level.
Aside from the new hire at head coach and front office issues, the Pistons still managed to add decent help to their roster. With new signees, Glenn Robinson III, Zaza Pachulia and Jose Calderon, along with the two 2nd round draft picks, Khyri Thomas and Bruce Brown, the team now has good depth that will bolster their bench. The rookies may not have been big names in this years’ summer league, but parts of their game were admirable, such as Khyri’s defense and Bruce’s court vision. With that being said, the new members might have what it takes to help push the Pistons back into compete mode.
Now, even the current members are putting in work to help improve this upcoming season. Stanley Johnson was seen working on his game with veterans Carmelo Anthony and Brandon Jennings.
Stanley isn’t the only Piston looking to improve. Pistons center, Andre Drummond, has been working on different areas of his game. Andre Drummond has even been working on shooting threes, which you live and die by in this league.
The Pistons now have the depth to compete at another level. Although the team needs to complete the puzzle with a better front office, a new head coach and the players’ willingness to improve just might be enough to push for a playoff appearance.
