The rookie class got to experience working with Ben Johnson and other Bears staff members at the rookie minicamp last weekend. The camp featured seven draft picks, 13 undrafted free agents and several tryout players, including veterans.

Notable participants included: Dillon Thieneman, Logan Jones, Zavion Thomas and Malik Muhammad. The minicamp also gave coaches an early chance to evaluate how the newcomers fit into the team’s culture and system.

Head Coach Ben Johnson held a press conference following the two-day minicamp. Johnson’s comments reflected a strong emphasis on discipline and player development, something Bears fans have been eager to see from a new coaching staff.

Draft Expectations

Johnson specified what he wants to instill in his rookies. He said, “We’re looking to establish what it looks like for us on a daily basis. What our expectations are. Get to know people, not only in the locker room that they’re interacting with every day, but just around the building that are here to provide resources for them to be the best players that they can possibly be.”

This mindset could end up being one of the most important changes Johnson brings to Chicago. The Bears are not only focusing on talent. They want young players to understand expectations immediately.

The franchise has struggled with consistency in recent years. Establishing accountability early could be extremely valuable in that regard.

Cornerback Malik Muhammad was selected by the Bears in the fourth round of the draft. Johnson discussed Muhammad’s fit in Al Harris’ cornerback room: “I think Malik is a very sharp young man, and he’s going to be able to embrace that coaching style with open arms.”

Al Harris demands physical and disciplined play from defensive backs. Muhammad appears to fit that style well and could become one of the steals of the draft class.

Johnson was later asked what he’s looking for in his wide receivers: “Speed, quickness, guys that might be better suited inside the number, a few guys that are going to be able to thrive outside of the numbers. I like the mix and the makeup.”

Ben Johnson succeeded in Detroit by using different skill sets creatively. He is determined to bring that flexibility to Chicago. A productive receiver group could heavily benefit Caleb Williams in his third year as quarterback.

What Will Be Thieneman’s Impact?

Safety Dillon Thieneman was the Bears’ first selection in the draft at No. 25 and has many fans excited. Johnson added to this saying, “I think the thing you see is that when the ball is in the air, he’s got fantastic acceleration to get to that catch point,” and “When he gets there, he arrives with some violent intentions.”

These comments should excite Bears fans because they highlight the aggressive identity this defense wants to play moving forward.

Thieneman’s instincts and physicality stand out immediately. If those traits translate quickly, he could become a valuable player in the secondary sooner rather than later.

Logan Jones’ Opportunity

After Drew Dalman’s retirement, the Bears desperately needed a center, and Johnson found that in Logan Jones. “Logan was one that stood out,” said Johnson. “My visit with him when he was here, I was extremely impressed by his football knowledge, makeup, very mature. To me, we’re not getting a rookie, we’re getting a guy that’s a little bit more of a seasoned player.”

Offensive line success depends on communication and intelligence as much as physical ability, especially as a center. Jones’ maturity and football IQ are big reasons why the Bears feel confident moving forward with him as their center.

Bears Are Building the Future

The Bears’ rookie minicamp provided an encouraging first glimpse at the organization’s newest additions and Ben Johnson’s vision for the team moving forward.

Johnson’s comments throughout minicamp made it pretty clear that this coaching staff values discipline and football intelligence. That approach feels like a needed change for a Bears team that has lacked consistency in recent years.

With talented young players already drawing praise from the coaching staff, expectations will continue to grow as offseason workouts progress. Bears fans now have several rookies to watch closely as the team prepares for training camp and the upcoming season.
