Jimmy Butler has been traded to the Golden State Warriors in a multi-team deal on Wednesday night, sending Andrew Wiggins, Dennis Schröder, Kyle Anderson, and a 2025 top-10 protected first-round pick to the Miami Heat.
This move gives the Warriors what they have been desperately searching for since Klay Thompson signed with the Mavericks— a second elite superstar to pair with Stephen Curry. Although Thompson had not been that player for a while, Golden State intensified its pursuit of a co-star for Curry.
The Warriors have been aggressive and open about wanting to add another star, and credible reports have linked them to Paul George, LeBron James, and Kevin Durant.
In fact, they initially pursued Durant before he informed the team he was not interested in returning to Golden State, where he had won two championships. That led the Warriors to shift their focus to Butler, who had been unsettled in Miami due to ongoing tension with the organization. This tension culminated in three suspensions in his final month with the Heat.
Golden State’s System Could Maximize Butler
Under Steve Kerr, the Warriors have historically been able to get the most out of their players.
Their past superteams’ dominance and ability to maximize talents such as Wiggins, Jordan Poole, and even a declining Thompson in their 2021-22 championship run should give fans confidence in the trio of Curry, Butler, and Draymond Green.
The prospect of “Playoff Jimmy” should also excite Warriors fans, as Butler has repeatedly proven his ability to carry a team deep into the postseason.
However, he will not have to shoulder the entire burden in this scenario since Curry remains the team’s focal point. This setup allows an aging Butler to manage his regular-season workload and even pace himself during the playoffs— a luxury he did not have as Miami’s lone superstar.
Potential Challenges for the Warriors
Despite the excitement surrounding the trade, there are legitimate concerns about Jimmy Butler‘s fit with the Warriors.
Butler will essentially replace Wiggins in the starting lineup. While Wiggins was a respectable 37.9% three-point shooter, Butler is far less effective from beyond the arc. His presence and Green’s lack of floor-spacing ability could lead to spacing issues that Kerr must address. This is a challenge Kerr has rarely faced during his tenure, making it crucial for Golden State to find a solution to keep the offense fluid.
Another major concern is Butler’s strong personality. His on-court fit with Green raises questions, but his presence in the locker room alongside another strong personality in Green could also be problematic.

However, both players are experienced veterans with a shared priority of winning, which should help mitigate potential conflicts. They also have experience as teammates, having played together on Team USA during the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Butler’s contract situation is another significant factor. Shortly after the trade was announced, he inked a two-year, $121 million extension with the Warriors, raising the question of whether he can still provide value at that price. Since Miami’s 2022-23 Finals run, Butler has not consistently performed at that elite level, making it fair to ask if he is still capable of being that caliber of player at this stage of his career.
Jimmy Butler’s Unexpected Extension
One of the biggest surprises of this trade is Jimmy Butler’s willingness to sign a two-year extension with Golden State.
Reports initially suggested that he was only interested in joining the Phoenix Suns.

Either those reports were inaccurate, or something during the negotiation process changed his mind. Before signing the extension, Butler had significant leverage due to his upcoming player option, essentially giving him control over where he would be traded. Despite that, Miami secured solid value in return for their 35-year-old aging superstar.
This trade signifies a major shift for both teams. The Warriors get a proven playoff performer to pair with Curry, while the Heat move forward without Jimmy Butler after years of internal tension.
All eyes will now be on Golden State to see if this move can help the team return to championship contention.
