The departure of defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley required the Packers to pursue a replacement. Hafley was hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins following two successful years in Green Bay. After Hafley left, Head Coach Matt LaFleur went right to work to find Hafley’s replacement.
Insert Jonathan Gannon, the former Arizona Cardinals head coach and Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator. Gannon was hired to replace Hafley nearly immediately, with a deal in place within a week of Hafley leaving.
Gannon prides himself in being an adaptable coach. When he arrived in Arizona, he stated clearly: “We’re going to be very adaptable, we’re going to be violent, we’re going to be explosive, and we’re going to be smart”.
While not a lot went right for Gannon in Arizona, the one thing he has clearly excelled at in the past is getting to the quarterback.
Packers’ Defensive Personnel Play to Gannon’s Strengths
The Packers faced criticism for hiring Gannon following an underwhelming performance as a head coach for the Cardinals. However, Gannon’s two seasons as defensive coordinator for the Eagles were highlighted by two top-10 total defenses, league leading sack totals, and a Super Bowl appearance.
The 2022 Eagles recorded 70 total sacks, the third highest total in league history. Four players recorded ten or more sacks that year. Green Bay has the necessary depth in their front seven to replicate that success.
Gannon’s new defensive front includes perennial All-Pro Micah Parsons, as well as several other high pedigree players, such as Rashan Gary, Devonte Wyatt, Quay Walker, and Edgerrin Cooper. Beyond the big names, the Packers had several defenders contributing significant snap shares in 2025.
Reason for Optimism for Packers Fans
Packers fans have no reason to panic. Green Bay will return high quality players at each level of the defense. Gannon is a coach with a proven track record as a coordinator and has taken an arguably less talented defense to the Super Bowl.
The Packers have invested tons of draft capital into building their defense. Some of those investments, such as Lukas Van Ness, have offered underwhelming returns. But Gannon has shown the ability to maximize the efficiency of his defensive lines.
If Gannon can replicate his 2022 success in Green Bay, the Packers will compete for a Super Bowl.
