As the new league year begins, the New England Patriots are in a much different position than past teams to make it to the big dance.
After accelerating their rebuild, the Patriots still have a treasure trove of cap space while having the bonus of a franchise quarterback on a rookie contract.
But despite only having six internal free agents this offseason, New England opted to let all of them walk. K’Lavon Chaisson, Vederian Lowe, Jaylin Hawkins, Austin Hooper, Khyris Tonga and Thayer Munford Jr. will all suit up for different teams in the fall.
Not only that, but New England’s release of Stefon Diggs is a tough blow to an already young wide receiver corps.
But as stated before, the Patriots are in a much different position than others— they can afford to let all these free agents walk.
It stings, especially for fans who grew to enjoy the run-blocking of Tonga or the defensive versatility of Hawkins. But with the draft around the corner, New England’s front office will have the opportunity to fill these holes and more.
The Reinforcements
In free agency alone, New England has addressed key positions heading into next year.
The Patriots signed Dre’Mont Jones to a three-year, $39 million contract, replacing Chaisson. Although it remains to be seen if Jones can replicate the career year Chaisson had in Foxborough, on paper, he should fit in quite well.
As for the massive hole at safety, New England brought in All-Pro Kevin Byard on a one-year, $7 million deal to watch over the field.
Byard, who played with Mike Vrabel in Tennessee, is coming off a First Team All-Pro year with the Bears. The ballhawk defensive back snagged a league-leading seven interceptions during the 2025 season.
To those concerned about the wide receiver corps for the upcoming season, although it remains to be seen how Eliot Wolf will address the rest of the room, the Patriots were able to haul in Romeo Doubs from Green Bay. Doubs joins New England on a four-year, $68 million contract.
It seems like the Patriots beat out a multitude of candidates for Doubs’ services. According to MassLive’s Mark Daniels, Doubs said, “the Patriots were an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.”
As for the offensive line, New England brought in the extremely talented Alijah Vera-Tucker on a three-year, $42 million deal. Vera-Tucker has struggled with injuries in the past, hence the team structured his contract as incentive-based.
According to ProFootballTalk, Vera-Tucker’s contract includes $4.25 million in per-game roster bonuses and has $2 million in annual incentives tied to playing time.
Not a bad haul coming off a Super Bowl appearance, and with the NFL Draft just around the corner, the Patriots have the opportunity to fill even more roster holes and reboot for the upcoming season.
Whether you dread it or not, the Patriots aren’t going anywhere.
