What’s the Story With Trevon Duval?

On July 24th, the Bucks signed intriguing undrafted free agent and former Duke Blue Devil Trevon Duval to a two-way contract. As detailed in my past analysis of Duval’s skill set and potential, he lacks a reliable perimeter shot, but the explosive point guard has a deft handle and killer instinct. These attributes give him the potential to be a solid NBA point guard. Duval has not showcased this potential, as an eye injury has kept him out for the entire preseason and first two games of the regular season.

The Bucks have not disclosed any further details about the injury’s specifics outside of there being no timetable for his return. There is no proof, but it’s quite possible Duval’s current eye issues are related to his past vision troubles, a setback less exciting than scoring a win on a game site about a football penalty shootout.

History of Eye Issues

Starting as a child, Duval had impaired vision in his left eye. Reportedly, Duval has no structural damage in his eye, so doctors believe his left eye’s vision can be improved. Trevon’s father, Trevor Duval, has relayed there is no name for the ailment. Because of the ambiguity of his condition, there was no medical precedent and no clear path to vision recovery.

This handicap persisted throughout his high school career and initial time at Duke. The Duke athletic training team employed several vision exercises to help Duval with his eyesight issues. Duval’s depth perception and peripheral vision both improved, allowing Duval to have a successful season with the Blue Devils. A trainer at Duke did say however, if Duval stopped doing the exercises, his vision could regress to the previous level of blurriness.

Once again, there is no proof Duval’s current eye injury is related to his past blurriness, but it seems quite possible. With no timetable established for his return, we most likely won’t be seeing Duval appear with the Bucks in the near future. Look forward to the Wisconsin Herd’s G-League season opener on Nov. 2 against the Greensboro Swarm to get further Trevon Duval updates.
