For years, the Philadelphia 76ers have built their identity around star power. From “The Process” to the MVP dominance of Joel Embiid, the organization has consistently prioritized top-end talent in its pursuit of a championship. That approach has kept the Sixers competitive, but it has yet to deliver the ultimate result.

Now, a different model may be quietly taking shape. With the continued rise of Maxey and the emergence of rookie VJ Edgecombe, Philadelphia could be building something less traditional but potentially more sustainable. Instead of relying solely on superstar talent, the Sixers may be discovering the value of chemistry, fit and shared development.

The Rise of Maxey

Tyrese Maxey’s growth has been one of the most important developments in Philadelphia over the past several seasons. Beyond his scoring and playmaking, his ability to set the tone has been critical.

For instance, in the Mar. 28 victory over the Charlotte Hornets, Maxey returned from a right pinky injury and recorded 26 points and eight assists. While Embiid led with 29 points, Maxey’s energy and vision fueled the team’s comeback. He created opportunities for teammates and kept the Sixers competitive throughout a tight 118-114 win

Maxey’s consistency and ability to perform under pressure make him more than just a scoring option. He is a stabilizing force whose style naturally elevates those around him. He creates opportunities through pace and spacing rather than isolation.

Enter Edgecombe

While Maxey represents the present, Edgecombe offers a glimpse into what the future could be.

Edgecombe’s contributions were evident in that same Hornets game. Maxey found him on transition threes and smart mid-range shots. They demonstrated their trust and timing that have become hallmarks of their pairing. Edgecombe also impacted the game off the ball, grabbing rebounds, spacing the floor, and creating secondary opportunities. His presence allows Maxey to attack the rim more freely.

Beyond this one game, Edgecombe has consistently shown maturity and versatility for a player just 20 years old. Edgecombe is averaging 16.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists while shooting 43.8% from the floor and 35.7% from deep.

Maxey has praised Edgecombe’s readiness for high-pressure moments, saying, “He’s ready. His demeanor, his maturity has been really helpful for us and really good for us to see…he’s the least of our worries.”

That confidence reflects more than individual talent; it highlights the growing chemistry and trust between the two players.

Why Chemistry Matters

Chemistry is often discussed, but rarely prioritized. Across the NBA, roster construction has long been centered on acquiring as much star power as possible. However, the development of players like Maxey and Edgecombe suggests that fit and cohesion can be just as important.

The aforementioned Hornets game illustrates this perfectly: Maxey and Edgecombe combined to help the Sixers overcome a deficit. Maxey fed Edgecombe for transition threes, and Edgecombe made plays off the ball. Their skills complement one another.

Maxey’s scoring and creation, combined with Edgecombe’s defense, spacing and secondary playmaking, show that chemistry can amplify individual talent.

Maxey himself noted that Edgecombe continues to impact the game even when he is not scoring. He makes his impact through defense, rebounding or setting up teammates. That type of complementary impact is often what separates good teams from truly cohesive ones.

A Shift in Philosophy

If the Sixers fully embrace this direction, it could signal a broader shift in team-building philosophy. Rather than chasing another superstar, Philadelphia could prioritize players who enhance the system already in place. That means valuing fit, development, and continuity over headline moves.

This approach has become increasingly relevant across the NBA, where depth and versatility are critical in a faster, more perimeter-oriented game. For Philadelphia, Maxey and Edgecombe could represent the beginning of that shift.

Growing Together

One of the biggest advantages of this pairing is timeline alignment. Maxey is entering his prime, while Edgecombe is just beginning his career. That overlap creates an opportunity for both players to grow together and develop chemistry over multiple seasons. That kind of continuity is difficult to build through trades or free agency. It comes from shared experience, repetition and trust.

What It Means for Philadelphia

None of this suggests that star power no longer matters. Players like Embiid remain essential to championship aspirations. But the way teams build around those stars is evolving.

For Philadelphia, the emergence of Maxey and the addition of Edgecombe present an opportunity to rethink that approach. Instead of searching for another big name, the Sixers may already have the foundation for their next era—one built on balance, growth and cohesion.

The Bigger Picture

The NBA is constantly evolving, and the teams that adapt tend to stay competitive. The league continues to emphasize speed, versatility and spacing. Chemistry becomes more than a secondary factor; it becomes a competitive advantage.

Maxey and Edgecombe may not yet define the Sixers. But they represent a direction built on fit, development and teamwork, proving that the next era in Philadelphia could be less about chasing stars and more about building something lasting.
