Coming off a lopsided victory against the New York Jets, the New England Patriots now turn their attention to Week 18, where a matchup with the Miami Dolphins could determine how favorable their playoff path looks.
Several AFC contenders remain closely clustered in the standings, making the outcomes of the final weekend critical to where New England ultimately lands.
Where the Patriots Stand Entering Week 18
Heading into the regular season finale, the New England Patriots have already punched their ticket to the postseason and secured their first AFC East title since the 2019 season. However, their exact seeding remains undecided.
New England is still in the hunt for the AFC’s top seed, trailing the Denver Broncos while holding a narrow edge over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the standings.
At the moment, New England’s pursuit of the top seed is complicated by its tiebreaker situation with the Denver Broncos. Even though the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos are tied in the standings with identical records, Denver currently holds the No. 1 seed because of their better record against common opponents.
The Broncos swept the Las Vegas Raiders this season, while New England lost its Week 1 game to Las Vegas, which ultimately gives Denver a victory in that category.
That means the Patriots not only need to take care of business in Week 18, but may also need help elsewhere to leapfrog Denver in the standings.

How the Patriots Can Still Earn the No. 1 Seed
For the New England Patriots to climb to the top of the AFC standings, the path is straightforward but not entirely in their control. New England must first take care of business against Miami to remain in the hunt for the first seed.
A win against the Dolphins would put the Patriots in a great position, but they unfortunately do not control their fate.
The Broncos’ Week 18 matchup will be against the Los Angeles Chargers, another playoff team. Given that the Chargers have already locked up a playoff spot, they will sit their quarterback, Justin Herbert.
Starting in Herbert’s place will be former No. 3 overall draft pick Trey Lance. The Patriots’ hopes of getting the AFC’s top spot will rely not only on their own performance, but also on the Chargers’, who are playing with very little at stake.
While the Patriots still have a path to the top seed, the margin for error is slim. A loss in the final week would not only eliminate any chance at a first-round bye but could also open the door for New England to slide down the AFC standings.
With several teams clustered closely behind them, the outcome against the Dolphins could significantly alter the Patriots’ playoff path.

Life Without the No. 1 Seed
If the New England Patriots fall short of the AFC’s top seed but secure a win, they would likely settle into the No. 2 seed.
That outcome would still give New England a favorable position entering the postseason, including a home game in the Wild Card round and another at Gillette Stadium if they make it past that point.
In that scenario, the Patriots would be in line to host the Los Angeles Chargers. While the Chargers are a playoff-caliber team, they would represent a less familiar opponent and a matchup that avoids the added volatility of a divisional rematch in the opening round.
A loss in the regular-season finale, however, could shift New England further down the standings to the No. 3 seed. That result would likely set up a home playoff matchup against division rival Buffalo Bills. With their familiarity, this game would bring a much different level of intensity to the first round.
No matter how the final weekend unfolds, the Patriots’ postseason road will be shaped by outcomes across the AFC. Whether it’s a favorable draw against a non-divisional opponent or a high-stakes rematch with a familiar rival, seeding will play a significant role in determining how difficult New England’s path becomes.
As Week 18 approaches, the priority remains clear: put themselves in the best possible position and let the rest of the conference sort itself out.
