The San Francisco 49ers open the 2026 NFL season with a crucial Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia.
For most NFL teams, the first week is rarely about perfection. Instead, it is more about readiness and little details. It’s no different for the 49ers.
The Rams are coming into the new season strong. This is especially true after future Hall of Fame defensive end Aaron Donald came out of retirement to play with his former team again.
With that said, San Francisco is already at a big disadvantage starting off this season, but what will it take for the 49ers to win in Week 1?
San Francisco Cannot Afford Turnovers Against This Rams Offense
When playing a team like the Rams, of course it is always important to play well when it matters most; however, getting the little details down will help out in major ways, especially against a powerhouse team.
Little things like the 49ers’ third down conversion rate are key for victory. Last season, it was second in the league at 49.8%. The same goes for their fourth down conversion rate. It was at 59.1%, which ranked 12th last season. Keeping long drives going will be key even if it’s for three points.
However, total turnovers may be the most important detail of them all for San Francisco. They had 22 total turnovers last season, which cannot carry over. This is especially important against a team like the Rams.
If the 49ers want to help themselves as much as possible playing in Australia, then the little details like turnovers, third downs, and even fourth downs are going to be critical.
Purdy and the Offensive Line Must Survive the Rams’ Front
Possibly the most important factor for San Francisco is their offensive unit against this Rams defense. They are loaded with superstars like Donald, Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, and many more.
They have one of, if not the best, defensive lines in the NFL. That means the 49ers’ offensive trenches need to step up in a major way.
Last season, the offense had an average of 437 yards per game, which ranked in the top ten. They also averaged 25.7 points per game, which ranked 10th. Additionally, they averaged 254 passing yards per game, which ranked sixth.
If this team can even come close to the stats they produced from last season, then they may do just enough to outscore the Rams.
Unfortunately, it will take more than simply having a lot of passing and rushing yards. It is also going to take great protection from the offensive line for quarterback Brock Purdy to work his magic.
Raheem Morris Inherits a Defense That Can Slow the Rams
One of the biggest offseason moves from the 49ers was bringing in a new defensive coordinator, Raheem Morris. Morris was formerly the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons.
Coming into Santa Clara, he already has one of the better defensive units in the league with stars like Fred Warner, Nick Bosa, Dre Greenlaw, and Deommodore Lenoir.
However, San Francisco has had another offseason containing many unfortunate injuries. The main one is Nick Bosa, who hasn’t been at training camp and practicing up until September 2.
San Francisco’s defensive line is going to have to perform well, including Bosa, if they want to stop this high-caliber offense led by the reigning MVP Matthew Stafford.
Averaging 394.6 yards per game last season, (most in the NFL), Los Angeles showed it can beat anyone. However, they have also shown that they can be slowed down by teams like the 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks.
Thankfully for Morris and the team, Bosa is traveling with the team for Week 1. That is a good sign for him to play and will be the biggest difference-maker in Australia.
The 49ers’ Biggest Opponent Remains Their Own Injury History
Most people around the league, including media and fans, know that the 49ers are one of the most injury-prone teams in the NFL. This has caused them to lose some franchise-altering games.
During the offseason and days leading up to Week 1, injuries have continued to be a restraint on the team, as George Kittle and Nick Bosa have missed most of training camp, Mike Evans and De’Zhaun Stribling have had trouble staying consistent, and Ricky Pearsall is out for the season.
In last season’s Week 5 matchup against the Rams, San Francisco lost Purdy, Pearsall, and Jauan Jennings to injuries, with Mac Jones also going down during the game.
Even with all of this, San Francisco still found a way to win while being down several key players because of injuries. If they won short-staffed last year, they should be able to compete with a healthier roster this time.
If the roster can somehow find a way to come out of this game healthy and win the game, the 49ers will put themselves in a great spot to start the season.
San Francisco Needs to Play Disciplined
Like many other teams, the 49ers do not need to be perfect in the opening week of the season but need to execute when it matters.
If the offense can find a rhythm, the offensive and defensive lines can exceed expectations, and Morris’ defense can bring early pressure, there should be no reason San Francisco can’t walk away with a win.
