Jalen Brunson – New York Knicks

It might seem odd to call Jalen Brunson underrated, given his breakout performances last season, but he still doesn’t get the credit he deserves as one of the best guards in the league.

Brunson has been the engine driving the New York Knicks’ offense this season, averaging 24.8 points, 6.7 assists, and four rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 48% from the field and 39% from three-point range.

Brunson’s unique ability to control the game’s pace and deliver in clutch moments makes him unique. He’s one of the league leaders in fourth-quarter scoring and has repeatedly come through when his team needs him most. Despite his stellar play, Brunson is often left out of conversations about elite guards, overshadowed by more prominent names with flashier play styles.

He also is a tried and true playoff riser. In 42 playoff games since his breakout postseason with the Mavs in 2021-22, Brunson has averaged 26.5 points on 56% true shooting in the playoffs. Brunson has also scored 1,115 points in the postseason since 2022, which puts him at third in the NBA over that span, trailing just Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Derrick White – Boston Celtics

Derrick White has been an essential piece for the Boston Celtics this season, yet he remains one of the most criminally underrated NBA players. 

Known primarily as a defensive specialist, White has expanded his offensive game significantly in 2025. He’s averaging 15.2 points per game on an impressive 50% shooting from the field and 41% from beyond the arc.

Defensively, White continues to be one of the best perimeter defenders in the league. His ability to guard opposing point guards and disrupt pick-and-roll actions has been crucial for Boston’s top-tier defense. He also leads all guards in blocks per game (1.2), showcasing his ability to protect the rim despite being undersized for that role.

While Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown receive most of the attention on this stacked Celtics roster, White’s two-way impact cannot be overstated. He does all the little things contributing to winning basketball, making him one of the most underrated players in today’s NBA.

Trey Murphy III

If I had asked you earlier this season to name the biggest star on the Pelicans, you would probably have answered Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, or maybe even CJ McCollum.

Very few fans, however, would have answered Trey Murphy III.

It’s not their fault. The Pelicans have not been exactly notable this season. They’ve been arguably the most injured team in the league, and cannot seem to keep their starters on the floor for more than a few games at a time.

The one stable force for the team has been Murphy, who continues to improve with each passing month. Murphy has always been an outstanding shooter, but his three level scoring ability has really taken a step forward this season. He has an offensive arsenal that most players five years his senior could only dream of having.

Murphy’s 24.8 points per game in 2025 put up in the top 20 for scoring in the entire league since 2024 ended. One could argue that it doesn’t matter if all that scoring isn’t conducive to winning basketball. But Murphy has the second best on/off rating among Pelicans starters this season. The numbers show a guy who’s been a consistent force of offensive creation on a team riddled by the injuyr bug and inconsistency.

If New Orleans is able to string together a few months of healthy basketball next season, fans will finally be made aware of of the the most underrated young talents in the game.

Tyrese Maxey – Philadelphia 76ers

It’s not often that the fourth leading scorer in the league doesn’t make the All-Star game.

Maxey’s 27.6 points per game puts him behind just Giannis, Shai-Gilgeous Alexander, and Nikola Jokic among the leagues top scorers.

He’s taken another huge leap forward this season for the Sixers, yet is rarely mentioned in conversations about the leagues rising stars. While young guards like Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton, LaMelo Ball, and Darius Garland garner a ton of attention, Maxey isn’t afforded the same level of star recognition. 

That is soon to change, though.

With James Harden no longer on the roster, Maxey has embraced a more prominent role as a scorer and playmaker.

He’s currently averaging career highs across the board with 25 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds per game while shooting an efficient 49% from the field and an elite 42% from three-point range. Maxey’s speed and ability to attack defenses off the dribble make him nearly impossible to guard in transition or half-court settings.

His consistent production and leadership have kept a brutally injured Philadelphia competitive in a stacked Eastern Conference. At fullt health (which seems like a pipe dream at this point) Maxey should finally receive some much-needed recognition.
