Wilt Chamberlain has seventy-two NBA records and as a result is undoubtedly the greatest statistical player in NBA history. His “Superman” type statistics are almost unfathomable and make anyone else’s averages look weak. With so many records and amazing stats he seems like a serious argument for the greatest player of all-time. These are his greatest statistical feats.
Scored 100 Points In a Game
On March 2nd, 1962, Wilt Chamberlain accomplished the greatest single-game performance in sports history. With 36 made shots (On 57.1 FG%) and 28 made free-throws, Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points and shocked the world. With the current-day NBA being drastically different than it was in Chamberlain’s playing days, it is understandably impossible for anyone to ever accomplish scoring 100+ points in a game.
Averaged 50.4 PPG In a Season
Along with the greatest single-game performance in sports history, Wilt Chamberlain also arguably has the greatest single season in sports history. In the 1961-62 NBA season — also the season Chamberlain scored 100 points — Wilt Chamberlain averaged a staggering 50.4 PPG, 13.3 more than anyone else in NBA history (Michael Jordan, 37.1 PPG in 1986-87).
Averaged 8.8 BPG and Has Most Career Blocks
When Wilt Chamberlain played basketball, the NBA didn’t record blocked shots, but a news archive and game films reveal blocked shot data from 112 of Wilt’s 1305 NBA games. In his 112 games where blocked shot data was recorded, Wilt averaged 8.8 BPG (the most official recorded BPG in a season is 5.6 BPG by Mark Eaton). If Wilt Chamberlain only averaged 4 BPG for his career, he would have 5220 total blocks and be the all-time leader in blocked shots (Hakeem Olajuwon holds that record with 3830).
Best Passing Center Ever (Was an NBA Assists Leader)
Along with 24.3 PPG and 23.8 RPG, Wilt Chamberlain averaged 8.6 APG in the 1967-68 season which led the league. Of course Wilt Chamberlain is the only center in NBA history to average the most APG, but Wilt also has the highest career APG average for a center with 4.4 career APG.
Averaged 48.5 MPG In a Season
In Chamberlain’s third NBA season, he played five overtime games, one double-overtime game, and finally one triple-overtime game where he played an amazing 63 minutes. Those overtimes games gave Chamberlain enough minutes played to average more MPG than there are minutes in a regular game.
Scored 4,029 points in a Season
Without counting Wilt Chamberlain’s three 3,000+ point seasons, Michael Jordan is the only player in NBA history to score 3000+ points in a season in NBA history (3041).
23,924 Career Rebounds
Wilt Chamberlain is the All-Time leader in rebounds. He averaged 22.9 RPG — also an NBA record — for his career and with current day centers not grabbing near as many rebounds as centers from the past, it is pretty safe to say this record will not be broken.
Recorded the Only Double Triple Double In NBA History
On February 2nd, 1968, Wilt Chamberlain recorded two triple doubles in one game as he finished with 22 points, 25 rebounds, and 21 assists and showed he was possibly the most well-rounded and purely talented player in NBA history. His combination of great scoring, rebounding and passing was truly something incomprehensible.
Grabbed 55 Rebounds Against Bill Russell
Many people believe that Bill Russell limited Wilt Chamberlain’s productivity while on the court. But on November 24th, 1960, Wilt Chamberlain proved otherwise. Chamberlain recorded an NBA-record 55 rebounds and dominated Bill Russell as he usually did.
