Despite the 2020 NBA Draft process officially changing, teams and their front offices are still trying to organize boards. A significant part of that process is international scouting. The Lead’s “Around the World” series will introduce casual fans to the foreign players who will become top draft picks. Next up: Théo Maledon.

  • Country: France
  • Current Team: ASVEL of the LNB Pro A

Strengths

Maledon has excellent size for a lead guard, standing at 6’5″. His sturdy frame and long wingspan allow him to be a physical offensive player and defend both guards and small forwards. On offense, Maledon’s best attribute is his accuracy. As a career 36 percent three-point shooter and 79 percent free-throw shooter, Maledon’s stroke is already reliable. His long legs also allow him to get to the basket and display his touch around the rim. Reports from France indicate that Maledon is an incredibly hard worker– a trait every team wants. Maledon has been playing pro basketball longer than any other prospect in the draft, so his experience will help him acclimate to the NBA.

Weaknesses

One of Maledon’s most significant weaknesses is his overall efficiency. In 2020, he had 41 total turnovers in 22 games, while being a career 48 percent shooter from two-point range. He needs to improve his decision making as well as his strength and explosiveness to become a more potent scorer inside. His ball-handling also needs work. Maledon additionally lacks aggressiveness on the court, but that may be because of his youth.

Outlook

Maledon is a reliable three-point shooter with solid touch around the rim. He plays strong defense and is versatile on that end of the court. However, Maledon needs to work on his ball skills and decision-making. His lack of strength also makes it hard to score in the paint or fight through screens. To become effective in the NBA, Maledon needs to land on a team with a more experienced lead guard. His mentor can give him time to work on his strength.
