41 years old, Aaron Rodgers‘ best seasons are behind him.
The veteran quarterback, however, believes that he still has good play in front of him. Finding a place for his services could prove difficult. It’s known what comes with allowing him in the building, and his performances aren’t justifying the extracurriculars anymore.
That being said, his name alone will always garner serious attention from some team out there. Only a limited number of spots would be available for an aging QB. A team would need to be in a win-now mode while not having their signal caller position sorted. One recent example could serve as a potential blueprint for the recently released Jets’ player.
Comparing to Joe Flacco
Longtime Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco is in a similar stage of his career. 2023 saw him step in for the Cleveland Browns. He not only elevated the squad but also led them to the playoffs. Deshaun Watson went down, and he took over in Week 13.
This could also be the playbook for the longtime Green Bay Packers’ signal caller. Sitting out and waiting for an opportunity to present itself could be Aaron Rodgers’ best chance to have a good ending as he concludes his career.
It would also lower expectations and mitigate drama. Joining a team late is difficult. Figuring out a playbook and getting in a rhythm with receivers midway through the year would give something of an out if things go south again.
Significant injuries happen every year. Adding a veteran QB would boost the respective fanbase and team. Compare the late-addition hypothetical with a regular training camp and offseason. Adding him to the fold to save a playoff push versus the conventional buildup wouldn’t be comparable. The mid-year intensity and focus would likely overshadow many of the other distracting aspects.
Waiting Is Aaron Rodgers’ Best Option
His waiting for a situation to uncover itself is Aaron Rodgers’ best shot at this point.
A team making a move for him would also likely be in a position to vie for the postseason. This would mean an overall good roster and support. Having good surrounding pieces, particularly up front, is absolutely essential at this point for the NFL superstar.
Not being part of a team and being involved in season-long game plans right away would likely be tough for someone who’s spent their life preparing for football games. At this point, the most recent spell with the Jets is too much to overlook.
A lot of these concerns, however, go away by taking the Joe Flacco approach. Many feel it’s time for the future Hall of Famer to hang it up. If he follows in another fellow QB’s footsteps late, there could be some more late success.
Aaron Rodgers’ best chance to compete at a high level is not to be on an opening day roster. Instead, he needs to let a good opportunity come to him.
