Abdul Carter Is in Perfect Position for Defensive Player of the Year

Abdul Carter‘s reign of terror against NFL offenses is underway in 2026.

The New York Giants’ 2025 No. 3 pick has quickly become the team’s best defensive player and is showing more than mere flashes to start the season.

In Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, Carter displayed his top-end traits all game and wreaked havoc in Dallas’ backfield.

With Carter beginning to live up to his anticipated potential and the Giants making headlines with an upset primetime victory, his case for Defensive Player of the Year can officially begin.

Carter’s Tier-1 Traits Already Showing

The Penn State product was drafted for his distinctive blend of speed, bend and strength.

This was all on display in Week 1, destroying tackles on the outside, panicking Dak Prescott and blowing past extra blockers.

According to NFLPro, Carter led the team with five pressures, three of which were quick (under 2.5 seconds). Additionally, NFLPro credited his pressure with causing Prescott’s interception.

Carter’s outstanding play hasn’t gone unnoticed, as he is PFF’s highest-graded Giant, and his 90.3 grade ranks third among all edge rushers in Week 1.

His talent is All-Pro-caliber, and with the front seven talent around him, his opportunity to shine is now.

Along with Abdul Carter, the Giants have 2025 All-Pro Brian Burns, former No. 5 pick Kayvon Thibodeaux and now 2026 first-round pick Arvell Reese on defense.

Each of these four players, as well as new defensive tackles Shelby Harris and D.J. Reader, brings elite potential to the New York defense.

Carter’s astute company up front opens up exciting matchup opportunities and stunts. It also forces single coverage on each edge rusher, leaving teams to pick their poison. Carter was the primary beneficiary of Dexter Lawrence II‘s double team in 2025. As a rookie, he led the entire league in quick pressures, per NFLPro.

His Year 2 leap will certainly force more teams to treat him as the defensive focal point due to Lawrence’s trade to the Bengals, but the talent around him will still create more easy opportunities than most teams can offer.

The Giants’ upset shocked the NFL world, and a Week 2 Monday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams gives them the chance to repeat that feat.
