After winning the Metropolitan Division in the 2024-2025 season, the Washington Capitals had a setback; they missed the 2026 playoffs by three points.
General Manager Chris Patrick responded to the setback by being more aggressive than any other team in the offseason.
As they have already shown what they are capable of, pairing new faces with the proven stars of DC could become a major challenge for other teams in the Eastern Conference.
The Capitals had one of the best, if not the best, offseasons in the NHL, and now they are positioning themselves to be serious contenders in the East.
Capitals Made Some Key Free Agency Moves
Washington started the offseason with a splash. They traded Connor McMichael, Milton Gastrin and a first-round pick for St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou. Kyrou is a two-way forward who has had three 30-goal seasons. Perhaps his best season is still on the horizon, as he will be playing on a line with more talent than he ever saw in St. Louis.
The Caps didn’t stop there. They also acquired Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch in a sign-and-trade deal. Tuch was a major part of the Sabres’ success last season, as he is a Swiss Army Knife. He can score, defend and acts as a major leader in the locker room.
To improve the offense even further, Washington signed veteran Boone Jenner to a four-year deal. Jenner may not be as offensively talented as Kyrou and Tuch, but his success in faceoffs and the penalty kill will make him a useful addition to the team.
Their final key new addition was defenseman Vincent Desharnais, a massive, stay-at-home defenseman who will also be used on the penalty kill.
Possibly the biggest move for the Capitals was re-signing the all-time NHL goal leader, Alex Ovechkin, to a one-year deal. Ovi may be 40 years old, but he’s still capable of contributing to the team’s success, coming off a 32-goal season. Keeping Ovechkin helps the Capitals maintain their identity and can even give the players extra motivation, as it could be his last chance at another Stanley Cup.
Washington Has a Young Presence on the Ice
Washington still has veteran stars, like Dylan Strome, Tom Wilson and Jacob Chychrun, who will all be vital contributors to the team’s success. However, they also have young stars in the making who can take a leap in the upcoming season. Players such as Ryan Leonard and Cole Hutson could both be on the verge of breakout seasons.
In his first full season with the team, Leonard recorded 45 points over 75 games. Hutson, a defenseman, was called up for the final 14 games of the season and managed 10 points in those games. With more veteran leaders coming into the lineup, the play from these young guns will strongly improve.
For example, five-year vet Aliaksei Protas, who put up 52 points last season, could be in store for even more success, now that he will be playing with guys like Kyrou and Tuch.
Logan Thompson Has What It Takes to Lead Capitals
The only thing that can hold the Capitals back would be the goaltending. However, Logan Thompson has what it takes to lead this team to the promised land.
Since joining Washington in 2024, Thompson has significantly improved his game, finishing fourth in Vezina voting the past two seasons.
Last season, Thompson was in the top five in wins, goals-against average and save percentage. Scott Wedgewood was the only other goalie to finish top five in all three categories. Now with better talent in front of him, his game should only improve.
