Mediocre Start
The San Francisco 49ers sit at 4-4, placing them third in the NFC West, just above the 4-5 Seattle Seahawks.
They trail the 4-4 Los Angeles Rams, who hold the tiebreaker over the 49ers due to their Week 3 win, and the Arizona Cardinals, who lead the division with a 5-4 record. With losses to both the Cardinals and Rams and a much-needed victory over Seattle, San Francisco’s divisional record is 1-2.
A Critical Win Revives Morale
It’s not the strongest start to their season.
The 49ers’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys before their bye week, however, put them in a good position to make a second-half run. Essential contributors like Christian McCaffrey and Juan Jennings are on track to return this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Additionally, kicker Jake Moody is expected back soon, and crucial defensive players such as Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga are anticipated to rejoin the lineup in the latter half of the season.
Shanahan’s Track Record of Midseason Turnarounds
The 49ers’ win against the Cowboys was crucial, positioning them at .500 and keeping playoff hopes alive.
Entering that game, San Francisco was reeling from a tough loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and a series of injuries, most notably the season-ending ACL tear suffered by Brandon Aiyuk. The defeat, coupled with Aiyuk’s absence, left the team vulnerable and with a dampened morale.
However, this win against “America’s team” has given them a chance to use the bye week to regroup and recover before making a potential second-half push. This is familiar territory under head coach Kyle Shanahan, who has led the 49ers through slow starts to the season before mounting successful runs to NFC Championship games and the Super Bowl.
There’s precedent for midseason adjustments under Shanahan’s guidance. Whether it’s through schematic changes or heightened focus and intensity, Shanahan has historically helped the team find its footing in the latter half of the season.
Divisional Losses Create an Unfamiliar Challenge
The 49ers face an additional challenge this year with the two division losses to the Rams and Cardinals.
In recent seasons, they’ve held a dominant 11-1 divisional record, with the sole loss coming in a largely inconsequential Week 18 game against the Rams last season. However, the team now finds itself in an unfamiliar position, needing to overcome those losses to stay competitive in the division race.
On the bright side, despite their slow start, the 49ers sit only half a game behind the first-place Cardinals. This leaves room for optimism and a potential late-season push to secure the NFC West title.
